Post subject: Which players have improved this year? | |
|
I've always believed team success is a sum of the parts of each players individual success. So lets compare 2018 and 2019 player performances with either a tick, cross, not applicable or the same:
1. Stephenson: X
2. DeGoey: tick
3. Wells: X
4. Grundy: tick
5. Elliott: X (ok he didn't play last year but 2019 ineffective)
6. Goldsack: X
7. Treloar: tick (albeit he still shits me)
8. Langdon: X
9. Murray: X
10. Pendelbury: tick
11. Beams: X (below expectations)
12. Scharenberg: X
13. Adams: X
14. Aish: tick (just)
15. Dunn: X
16. Mayne: same
17. C. Brown: tick
18. Varcoe: X
19. Greenwood: same
20, Reid: X
21. Phillips: X (tough but fair)
22. Steele: same
23. Roughead: tick (great addition)
24. Thomas: X X X
25. Crisp: same
26. Daicos: X
27. W.Kelly: n/a
28. Murphy: X
29. Broomhead: n/a
30. Moore: half tick
31. Appleby: X
32. Hoskin Elliott: X
33. Rupert: same
34. T Brown: n/a
35. Quaynor: n/a
36. Sier: X
37. Maynard: same
38. Howe: same
39. Crocker: X
40. Atu B. n/a
41. Mihocek: same
44. Madgen: X
46. Mason: X
Results:
* 7.5 players improved (hence ticks)
* 19 players gone backwards
* 7 same output
* 5 n/a
Staggering we are still in contention with these figures. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Moore is way more than a half-tick, imo, even accounting for injuries. Went to a different level this year and would have been in line for AA if not for the injury. I also think Maynard and Crisp have gotten better. Greenwood has offered something more too; I'd give him at least a half-tick.
I think you may be being a little harsh with some of the crosses, too. You can't say Wells and Elliott have gone backwards (at worst, same as last year). And Goldsack hadn't even played a VFL game at this time last year, so I reckon it's too soon to judge whether he's gone backwards; perhaps we're still waiting to unleash him at the right time. Crocker is breaking even so far too and Daicos is about where he was last year (which, admittedly, is disappointing in its own right).
For me, the clear disappointments have been De Goey (despite a great start to the year), Hoskin-Elliott, Thomas, Scharenberg (if a fair assessment can be made on his two games back), Sier, Varcoe and Cox. Obviously we're missing Langdon, Stephenson and Dunn big time too. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Can't think of any to be honest. And that's been our problem. Even Grundy had a better year in 2018. |

This thread highlights the biggest blue that supporters make every year.
The moment their club picks up a couple mature age players ( in our case, Beams and Roughead ) everyone thinks their club is automatically going to be better.
The harsh reality is, for every player who improves from one season to the next, there is usually another who drops off. The clubs who improve the most, are the ones who manage to buck that trend for a season ( although it usually catches up with them the following year )
Any elite club will tell you that what drives MOST players to perform at their best, is pressure from below. The fear of being dropped is very real, particularly for second and third tier players. Unfortunately, our injuries are a double whammy because not only do we not field close to our best 22 but we also can’t create pressure from below.
Some of those players ( obviously not all ) who have dropped off, would have been better served with a block of games in the VFL just to get their confidence and touch back.
Unfortunately, with no one to replace them, they simply continue to play in the seniors without any “ acquired “ form or confidence. |

Improved is Roughead, JDG, Crisp, Grundy, C Brown, Aish, Moore (before injured again at critical time of year)
Same is Pendles, Maynard, Howe, Mihocek.
The rest have either regressed or been injured/suspended for a lengthy time. _________________ Human behavioural studies suggest people who use a lot of swear words tend to be more honest & trustworthy. |

^^^
I come at ranking SOME of the players output from a slightly different angle.
I don’t have an expectation of “ second tier “ footballers improving year on year.
That’s why they are remembered as reasonable footballers who, because of their consistency, squeezed the best out of themselves throughout their career.
Every club has them and at Collingwood, Phillips is the classic example. Phillips isn’t overly well skilled and never will be but he is an endurance beast and wills himself to more contests than most. Not sure how he improves any further. I don’t think he is the type to have further improvement in him. I’m just thankful his output is similar to last year.
Clubs are always asking for improvement from their players, that’s the footy departments job but realistically, it ain’t that easy across a list of forty plus players.
We also have to expect that at around 30, players are going to experience some drop off. Not sure we can keep asking our senior players to maintain their output heading towards their mid 30s.
The bulk of my post was designed to be a part explanation as to why there could be some drop off in individuals. Injuries not only have a profound impact on those who aren’t on the ground but also those who are on it.
Your rankings are fine. Who am I to disagree with a well measured opinion. |

Callum Brown: gives us pace , some sausage rolls, hard at it.
Stevo: before he stuffed up was killing it.
IQ: in a short time has shown a lot for a kid. Given our back line some run.
Pendlebury: Has still been our great general
Greenwood: Can show he can play down back very well , was the difference against the swans when they were coming.
Roughead: Has been Our defensive lynch pin. _________________ " Ohhh Banksy and out comes the Note Book".
