Here's the ones that topped the charts in Australia (obviously some were released in 1969 but made it to number 1 in 1970):
Elvis Presley "Suspicious Minds"
Johnny Farnham "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"
Shocking Blue "Venus"
Led Zeppelin "Whole Lotta Love"
The Beatles "Let It Be"
Norman Greenbaum "Spirit in the Sky"
Ray Stevens "Everything is Beautiful"
The Beach Boys "Cottonfields"
Creedence Clearwater Revival "Up Around the Bend" / "Run Through the Jungle"
Simon & Garfunkel "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)"
Mungo Jerry "In the Summertime"
The Mixtures "In the Summertime"
The Carpenters "(They Long to Be) Close to You"
Creedence Clearwater Revival "Lookin' Out My Back Door" / "Long as I Can See the Light"
Miguel RĂos "A Song of Joy" |

1970, not a great year for Australian acts and content because of the pay for play dispute. |

And 3 wonderful songs (one of a Beatles song that makes the original sound like it was done by amateurs) from my favourite Australian album of 1970: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XccQbq1Jvd0

It is possibly worth mentioning that the credits for Michael Carlos on the "Empty Monkey" are, I believe, wrong - I'm pretty sure it's John Bissett on all those tracks. Michael Carlos is a legend in his own right of course (see, in passing, http://musictrust.com.au/loudmouth/play-it-again-sam-full-steam-ahead/ ), but I believe he left for Tully the previous year. My links to Michael Carlos' magical playing will likely have to wait until the fiftieth anniversary of Jeannie Lewis' Free Fall Through Featherless Flight.
In 1970, Australian acts probably struggled a bit for air in any event - Led Zeppelin II and III, Let It Be, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Cosmo's Factory, All Things Must Pass, Get Yer Ya Ya's Out, Paranoid, Abraxas, Layla, Moondance, Deja Vu, Deep Purple in Rock, Sweet Baby James, Band of Gypsies, Tea for the Tillerman, Morrison Hotel, Chicago, Lola v Powerman and the Moneygoround, Chicago, Loaded, Ladies of the Canyon, John Barleycorn Must Die, Fire and Water, Stage Fright, the triple album from Woodstock, Benefit etc etc would have made it difficult for anyone much to get a look in. |
