I dont want to guess that he'll be ok. His body is in good shape and he has the right attitude, but what will one heavy knock do to him?

This is how I look at it, I know right now I'm on the side of giving him a chance, but of course it all comes down to the medical - who are we to stand in the way of a boys dreams - also as Presti35 says, he ticks a LOT of boxes.

I'm reminded of Collingwood's doctor ruling Steve Johnson unfit in late 2006.
The next year he won the Norm Smith medal and he played in 3 premierships.

If independent reliable medical sources say McCartin's fit, and if he plays with a protective helmet, why wouldn't we take him?

Helmets do SFA for concussion. It’s the brain smashing into the inside of the skull that does the damage and no helmet can prevent that.

Would love to see the Big Mac, Hulk Hogan and the Giant Cox doing business in the forward 50...if we can just get the Mouth from the South and Bobby Henan in front and centre the flag is ours!

So when he develops CTE the stories will start with “Ex-Collingwood player.....”

No thanks, we don’t need this.

That's right.
One of the hardest hits I ever saw was Craig Kelly running through Tony Hall. He hit Hall down the side and didn't touch his head. Hall was unconscious before he hit the ground. He was badly concussed too.

I suspect that if still available, once we've secured Reef McInnes, our next pick will be used on Paddy. We desperately need a key forward.

Pros:
Age
Size
Contract length
Contract salary

Cons:
The fear of what'll happen if he gets crunched.

It's low risk, high reward as far as the club goes, but from a personal view for Paddy, the risk could be much higher.

Interview him, put him through the rigger, talk to external doctors/experts. If we do our homework correctly, I'd hope to make the right decision. But if we didnt go for one of the fit FF's available, I dont see why we'd go for one that has missed a season and has a question mark hanging over them.

My question is, if we go for him, how do we go about it?

Can he be signed as a DFA? Or does he need to be drafted in one of the upcoming drafts?

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/P/Paddy_McCartin.html

and after browsing that, take a look at the top 6 in the 2006_AFL_draft

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_AFL_draft (reminds me of this year's batch of talls)

The selection used on a player is history...What happens next is probably 50/50... Paddy is clearly in the wrong 50%. He simply doesn't warrant any hype or hope.

A. He never had any runs on the board, and B., he unfortunately was unable to continue.

A season in lower grade is his pathway...I doubt he will be gifted a rookie spot...I wouldn't

He'll 100% be drafted by someone.
