It's back up, now - she's making the classic mistake that politicians make in this environment - don't answer the question and pivot. You can do that effectively in a press conference - you can't do it in a commission of inquiry - whether or not a person is lying, it makes it look like they are.

"Are you having some difficulty answering my questions?" Classic.

Where did the recording come from?

I was wondering that too. At first I thought that was pretty shocking, that the private conversations of a couple would be recorded. (I can only guess that either Maguire, who seems unusually cooperative, was doing it as insurance in case he needed to double-cross Berejiklian in future; otherwise, I imagine we're in the realm of wiretapping.) But given their positions and what they were discussing, it's absolutely in the public interest however it came to light.

ICAC did the wire-tapping as part of their investigations. Maguire's phone was tapped as early as 2017 as part of another investigation.

Wow, had no idea they had those powers! Not sure how comfortable I'd feel about those tactics being used against ordinary members of the public (though yes, I'm sure police and security agencies already do this on a regular basis).

^

I'm pretty sure Police at least need to get court approval to phone tap, but ICAC's don't. Another good reason not to use a landline.

(Thanks NomadJack)

How do you think they weed out corruption if they can't intercept telecommunications?

My understanding was that it was usually based on testimony and/or documents provided by whistleblowers. Of course, now I think about it, it makes total sense that there are situations where communications might need to be monitored.

She "can't remember" in the same way Andrews "can't recall".

^ It's kind of scary that you think the two things might be comparable.

Anyway, it should be fun on Monday. Keep the popcorn for the big finish.

They can tap landlines, mobile phones need access to the unit or SIM to clone them IIRC.

They can access records, texts messages and other things stored by the telecommunications provider but if you use any modern tech you can't be tapped without significant effort.

Calls and messages over Microsoft Teams, Facebook Messenger, facetime etc can't be intercepted without hacking your access.

You're right, one person can't recall why 5 years ago she supported a grant funding of which there are probably thousands every year...

The other couldn't recall who made the decision to tell Victoria Police they won't be needed for hotel quarantine during a once in a hundred year pandemic he was supposed to be in charge of...

The significant difference, of course, is that one recollection was a political issue, whereas the other is potentially a criminal one - but carry on with the party-political garbage.

By they way, I know you aren't Captain Reliable - but 2018 is only 3 years ago, not 5.
