No doubt Grundy will get better - first game back after knee surgery. But let's not pretend he was awesome. Grundy had 17 disposals at a 52.9% disposal efficiency (seventh worst in the game).

Was it Melbourne's ruck dominance, or Melbourne's ability to capitalise off turnovers, scoring 11.9 (75) to 5.9 (39) for the Bulldogs, the real difference.

You can't have watched it or you wouldn't have asked.

In the space of 19 disposals, 17 of which were Melbourne's, they kicked 5 goals. The rucks turned the game on its head and killed the contest in under 2 minutes of actual play.

I didn't say Grundy was "awesome" - he was an upgrade on Jackson for Melbourne and the Melbourne pair dominated the game. Grundy had more hitouts to advantage per contest attended (the stupid so-called "hitout to advantage rate" is calculated on the wrong numbers - if you attend 47 ruck contests, get thrashed in 46 but the 1 you do get is to advantage, you get a "100%" hitout to advantage rate, which makes the stat meaningless) than any of the others.

Melbourne had a poor game, generally. I'm not sure you could say Grundy was "missing in action" - he was the third-highest-ranked Melbourne player on the AFL site, behind Oliver and Hunter. You don't win games of football when 12 of your players all have under 10 kicks in a game. Melbourne really, really struggled when Grundy wasn't in the ruck - McDonald and Brown between them attended 32 ruck contests for just 5 hitouts - and not one went to advantage. It looked to me like the knock-on effect of losing Gawn was that Melbourne were short 1 ruckman and one tall forward option.

Grundy won the hit out 45-42 against Brisbane’s 2 main ruck options yet the lions slaughtered Melbourne in clearances
You’ve said several times now Grundy has a midfield capable of benefitting his ruck work they’ll always win clearances
Well well well
It seems the issue wasn’t our midfield but more the useless places he hits the ball too
Oh wait let me guess it’s all the midfields fault again and Melbournes mids are now useless and Grundy isn’t the issue still
He’s basically a guy who gets his hand on the ball first but has no idea what to do with it when he does

With Gawn likely to be out for several weeks we will soon see why the club was so desperate to clear him off the books at any price
Kudos to the club for identifying the biggest weakness we had on the list and removing it
$650k well spent

The Melbourne midfield are used to better ruck service than that!

You know what, I'm beginning to think Treloar made him look good! Wink

Grundy is cooked, cooked, looked lost when Hillbilly Gorn went off, did he actually take a mark, or kick ?? Deeees are welcome to him, we got three great recruits with his exit, an saved the bank balance. He does not suit a Melb jumper, but thats just the tip of the iceberg.

Best ruckman ever to play for Collingwood. He's gone because ourt gameplan doesn't require a competent ruckman, not because he isn't good at it.

He's gone because he isn’t suited to our game plan.

I think we’ll do just fine when Cameron develops into a dominate ruck as he knows how to get into position to take marks at both ends of the ground.

Grundy is a tap ruckman but otherwise plays very very small.

No he’s gone because he was a $600k player being paid way to much for his output simple
Other than getting his palm on the ball first mostly dropping at his own feet he didn’t do anything to justify his salary
Cameron and Cox can take contested marks he doesn’t
They can go forward and kick goals he doesn’t
They are prepared to sacrifice for the team he wouldn’t

He was gone the minute Buckley was gone
His name was on Wright’s list the minute he arrived because Wright new his true value
Sugar coat it anyway you want in your own mind but the output of Cameron and Cox earning combined half of what Grundy was on shows the exactly why the move was made
Any smart administrator would have done the same thing
If you listen to the coach he was in favour of keeping Grundy it wasn’t game plan specific at all it was salary v value to the team
Last night he was shown to be of limited value to a side when the pressure was out on his shoulders to perform at the highest level
Watch the replay and see both Petrecca and Oliver being feet in the clear at bounces and Grundy unable to get the ball anywhere near them then them standing there shaking there heads in dismay
Melbourne will rue this decision until Gawn gets back and gives there midfield useful service from bounces

2 Copeland trophies - and in one of those years, he carried a poor team to a Grand Final just about on his own. It's amazing how quickly people forget.

By the way, there's no need to be a %$^%$£$%, just because you disagree with me.
