Those who had an awareness of Nicks abilities as an U14 year old, would know that what separated him from anyone else at that age, was his professionalism and just how driven he was to be best the could.
He wasnt getting paid as a 13 year old, he wasn’t getting paid as a 15 year old and he wasn’t paid as a 17 year old but that didn’t stop him being the best junior in the country. If you’re going to pay anyone big money on a six year deal, then it’s Nick. Conversely, we could simply risk losing him and having the same people whinge about letting our best player go. |

The re-signing curse has hit again with the Daicos brothers having absolute stinkers on the back of the announcements of the contract extensions.
This is on the back of Cox, McCreery and Nobles form falling off the edge of a cliff after their contract announcements.
Talk about an unexpected curse.
PLEASE leave all contract signings/extensions to October!!! _________________ - Side By Side - |

There’s an added benefit that comes with mid year signings. You have far better clarity on the money you have left over for any signings in the off season. If you hold off signing players who want to get the deal done, then you are only inviting player managers to shore up their future elsewhere due to the uncertainty. Imagine negotiating Nicks contract in October, you wouldn’t have any idea how much you would have left to attract other players in the trade period. These negotiations generally go on for months too.
Same as the trend for longer contracts, we mightnt like it but it offers the club so much more flexibility in spreading out the value of the entire contract over a greater number of years. In short, it’s signings during the season and long contracts ( if they’re justified ) that allow for those top up players to be traded into your club during the trade windows. |
