2024 pre-season hit-out

To me that was a 6/10. Like QM67 said, most of the time they just went through the motions. Impressed with Sargent Shultz who looks like a very good get by the club. Charlie Dean might be in the running for a defensive role. Talking about defence, Noble played well and only injury will keep him out of the team for round zero. Overall a bit boring but we did enough to win.

There were a few positives from the Richmond game -

Frampton and Dean were much better as key defenders this week, albeit they didn’t have to contend with Larkey this time around.
Lipinski’s form is career best. His ball use inside 50 is elite and his ability to cover ground and drop off his opponent is going to see him do plenty of damage forward of centre.
Schultz is another one whose ball use around the goals is elite. He’s going to be a serious weapon with ball in hand.
Cox was better than Cameron both in the ruck and around the ground and while that’s a good sign for Cox, we will need a bit more from Cameron, so as to free up Cox for longer in the forward line.
I thought Macrae was ok, considering he came on late in the game. I’m not sure he can run out a full game yet, so he looms as almost the perfect tactical sub right now.
Hoskin Elliot played in defence and handled the ball better than most. He was very solid.
Finally, special mention to Johnny Noble. He was very good and played with an intensity higher than most. I hope they find a way to fit him in for the season opener and allow him some time to cement his position once again.
You can’t fit 27 into 22, so the competition for spots is strong and that’s just how you want it when you’re looking to go back to back.

Tigers wrap up pre-season with loss to Magpies

In a bizarre conclusion to a pre-season match, Collingwood big man Mason Cox tussled with Richmond utility Marlion Pickett seconds before the siren sounded. Other players became involved in the scuffle, allowing Billy Frampton to bomb his kick from 65m out through as no players were protecting the goal-line.

For Collingwood, premiership heroes Jordan De Goey, Nick Daicos and Josh Daicos showed no signs of off-season rust. The only minor concern for Collingwood surrounds ruckman Darcy Cameron, who made late contact with Richmond youngster Tylar Young in the third term.

Although a 50m penalty was paid against Cameron and the incident will likely be scrutinised by the match review officer, the Magpies big man is unlikely to be suspended as the contact was minor.

The Daicos brothers and De Goey predictably impressed, but the performance of Patrick Lipinski (23 possessions, two goals) would have impressed the Magpies just as much. After starting as the sub in last year's grand final, Lipinski has not missed a beat during the pre-season and he once again shapes as a key cog of Collingwood's midfield. The former Western Bulldog underwent a shoulder reconstruction after the 2022 season and failed to recapture his best last year, only just hanging onto his spot for the Magpies' grand-final win against the Brisbane Lions.

Fremantle recruit Lachie Schultz was lively in his first game for the Magpies, soccering a goal through the third quarter.

Collingwood also head north on March 9 for a preliminary final rematch against GWS at Giants Stadium.
