No, Victoria is also competing in the COVID Olympics, like every non-Belgian country, and therefore cheating to try to win a medal.

Let's get real here. Many countries like the UK, etc. are not counting COVID deaths in aged-care homes. Shocked

And not testing dead people who obviously died of COVID, because that would be "wasting" a COVID test.

Just watched Andrews’ press conference. Key points:

• Third Step (i.e. end of lockdown) brought forward by one week to 19 October
• Curfew lifted after tonight
• Primary schools go back week of 12 October
• Increased fine for illegal indoor gatherings (Now $5000 per person)
• 130,000 employees can return to work (not sure which industries)
• Exercise permitted within 5km of workplaces as well as home

Third step is still reliant on the same numbers being met, doesn’t mean anything will change on the 19th if we have had 6 unknown cases or an average of 5.1 cases a day

Oh now he is saying face shields are no longer acceptable, thanks Dan, that’s great news for the deaf community Rolling Eyes

actually it doesnt effect us deaf people, if you are talking to a deaf person you are allowed to lower your mask, and deaf people are exempt (not sure why on that bit).

Don't think they are exempt, but can be lowered if needed to communicate. Although I do have friends who have had people very rudely refuse to lower their masks when asked.

Yet in Victoria if you die in a car accident and had covid, its a covid death or if you die of a drug overdose but were covid positive, its a death because of covid.

Here's another interesting set of figures – previous fortnightly averages for every Sunday for the past five weeks (i.e. covering the period since Stage 4 was introduced):

16 August: 371.9
23 August: 255.1
30 August: 160.8
6 September: 93.5
13 September: 58.7
20 September: ? (sitting at 45.5 today; looking like it’ll be around 36 or 37 on Sunday)

If you were to graph that, presuming the rough trajectory continues, you'd be looking at something like a fortnightly average of – if I had to take a wild stab in the dark – 23 new cases per day and daily cases in the mid-teens by 27 September, as suggested above.

Update:

16 August: 371.9
23 August: 255.1
30 August: 160.8
6 September: 93.5
13 September: 58.7
20 September: 35.9
27 September: 22.1 (very close to the prediction above!)
4 October: ? (weekly average is sitting on 14.7; my estimate is that the fortnightly average will end up being around 11–12. We’ll then have two more weeks to get down to 5, which we might well achieve by the 11th.)

Yes, just waiting for the evidence that the wearing of masks is related to the Premier of Victoria getting kickbacks from the Chinese Government: another Eddiesmith nonsensical accusations 🙄 Rolling Eyes

5 new cases and 3 new deaths reported in Victoria.

The 7-day rolling average of cases is down from 26 for the week ending 21 September to about 14 for the week ending today.

That's 25 days in a row of fewer than 100 new cases, 19 consecutive days of fewer than 50 new cases and 10 days in a row of 25 cases or less.

As reported by DHHS this morning:

- 14 day rolling averages: Metro 20.3 (down); Regional 0.6 (steady).

- Unknown source cases: Metro 31 (steady - data not updated since 25 September); Regional 0 (steady).

“ At the moment, if a case is notified as having died of other or unknown causes, but was coronavirus positive at the time of death, it is not included in federal government statistics.

This differs from Victoria, where any death of a person who is found to have died with COVID-19 is included in the tally.”

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.smh.com.au/national/victorian-coroner-investigates-australia-s-youngest-covid-death-20200828-p55q89.html

From a later article

“ The man in his 20s who was called Australia's youngest COVID-19 victim was suspected by senior health officials to have died from another cause, possibly a drug overdose, at the time Premier Daniel Andrews publicly linked his death to the coronavirus.”

That article, of course, predated Victoria's two substantial upward revisions of historical aged care deaths to account for differences in reporting at Federal and State level.

The agreed position, as reported by the Commonwealth, is as follows:

Quote:
As per the COVID-19 national guidelines, a COVID-19 death is defined for surveillance purposes as a death in a probable or confirmed COVID-19 case, unless there is a clear alternative cause of death that cannot be related to COVID19 (e.g. trauma). There should be no period of complete recovery from COVID-19 between illness and death. Where a Coroner’s report is available, these findings are to be observed.

https://www.health.gov.au/resources/covid-19-deaths-by-age-group-and-sex

That is, the distinction "of" and "with" has no place in the Federal scheme. What matters is that a death isn't counted if a person with coronavirus died of some other obvious and logically unrelated cause.

We won't know the true position for years, probably - as to which, see: https://theconversation.com/died-from-or-died-with-covid-19-we-need-a-transparent-approach-to-counting-coronavirus-deaths-145438

There is, however, no proper basis at all for an assertion that Victoria is "over-counting" COVID-19 deaths. To the contrary, the only Federal/State revisions that have been made to the Victorian death tally, so far as I am aware, have been revisions upwards.

Yet the man who died of a drug overdose is still listed

The extra adding of cases I assumed was because they had been reported to the Federal authorities as required but not as Covid deaths, but now the Victorian Government is reclassifying them because they either had Covid or were at the homes with significant outbreaks.
