Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool Shocked Shocked

Tottenham 6-1 Man United Shocked

How does this change things? Chelsea for the title??

"Historians were reaching for the record books as the goals flowed, first at Old Trafford as United conceded six goals in a match for only the third time in the Premier League era, then at Villa Park as Liverpool surrendered seven goals for the first time since 1963."

VAR is getting it right despite football's wider mood of suspicion and distrust

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/21/var-is-getting-it-right-despite-football-wider-mood-of-suspicion-and-distrust

"Of course Baker’s assertion that laws are drawn up by anonymous idiots who don’t understand football is easy enough to refute. After all, the International Football Association Board, which sets the rules for professional football, has Luís Figo and Zvonimir Boban among its decision makers.

But Evra’s criticisms of VAR tap into a wider mood of suspicion and distrust over the use of tech. ... But Evra is wrong and the science proves it. The biggest ever study into VAR, published last month in the Journal of Sports Sciences, found that it raised the accuracy of “match-changing decisions” from 92.1% to 98.3%

... On average the researchers found there were only 4.4 checks required per match – while the median time taken when referring to the VAR was 22 seconds (although that went up to 62 seconds for on-field reviews).

Meanwhile a separate study published in July, which looked at whether VAR had changed the way football was played in La Liga during the 2018-19 season found it had “hardly any effect”. Unsurprisingly the biggest difference was that matches where VAR was used featured more goals and went on a little bit longer.
...

Last year the Premier League chose not to use the VAR to check whether a keeper had moved on penalties. Now it does. ...

The Premier League also recently refined its guidance on defensive handballs. So if a defender is perceived to have spread his body to block a shot or cross and it hits a hand, it’s a penalty.

... this season referees are being asked to look at the “T-shirt line” when judging handball – so being hit above where the sleeve on a T-shirt ends is not handball."

Van Dyke was injured by goalie Pickford (no penalty) in Liverpool's 2-2 draw. Liverpool are leaking goals.

I wonder what the title odds are now. I'll check...

"The game of soccer seemed immune to the upheaval going on around it — and then the current season started. To put it in technical terms, the Premier League has lost its freaking mind. Everton, last season’s 12th-place team, sits alone in first place and is perfect through four matches. Aston Villa, which finished last season one spot clear of the relegation zone, beat defending champions Liverpool 7-2 on Oct. 4. (Yes, you read that right.) Manchester City, winners of two of the last three titles, is currently in 14th place. Manchester United, the richest club in England, is all the way down in 16th.

The chaos has been powered by a never-before-seen explosion of goals...

The average Premier League game this season has featured 3.79 goals per game.
...

An obvious culprit is the increase in penalties awarded. Last season, the International Football Association Board introduced new, more clear-cut, much stricter handball rules. While Premier League referees essentially didn’t enforce the new regulations last year, FIFA has taken over the league’s application of Video Assisted Referee (VAR). With every potential offense now under an instant-replay microscope, the rate of penalties awarded has skyrocketed: It’s 0.66 per match this season, up from 0.24 last season and 0.27 the season before.

More and more of those penalties have come from handballs, too. According to data from the soccer consulting firm 21st Club, 24 percent of penalties this season were for handballs — up from 21 percent last year, 14 percent the year before that and 8 percent in 2017-18. The new rules and their sudden enforcement have required defenders to change the way they approach the game when they’re inside their own penalty area.
...

He pointed to Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij. “Inside the penalty area, he’s always putting both hands behind his back. You need to do that. Otherwise it’s too easy to give up a penalty.”"
