Rioli can only be punished once for anti-doping violations

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/rioli-tests-positive-to-cannabis-says-afl-20190924-p52uem.html
[Updated]

"Rioli's second alleged violation - on September 5 - happened before he became aware of the first incident involving a urine substitution six days later.

They are therefore in the eyes of ASADA treated as concurrent and he can only be punished for the incident which carries the heaviest penalty; which will be the urine substitution.
...

Cocaine, which Collingwood's Sam Murray tested positive two, is in category S6, which carries a maximum penalty of four years.

Significantly, the burden of proof is the opposite with the two drugs.

With Rioli's case, ASADA would have to prove that Rioli was using cannabis in an attempt to enhance his performance to increase his ban."

Willie Rioli's future unclear as drug case drags on

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/willie-rioli-s-future-unclear-as-drug-case-drags-on-20200213-p540nk.html

"The slow progress is consistent with some of the ASADA cases involving AFL players. Collingwood's now ex-defender Sam Murray tested positive to a metabolite of cocaine in July of 2018, but did not receive his sanction for more than a year, eventually receiving a ban of 18 months, which allows him to play round one this season (for VFL club Williamstown)."

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-04/west-coast-eagles-willie-rioli-doping-ban-backdated-asada-say/13215528

Quote:
West Coast Eagles' forward Willie Rioli has been hit with a two-year suspension for substituting a urine sample during a drug test in 2019.

Rioli will be eligible to return to football for the West Coast Eagles this season, after the AFL confirmed the premiership player's suspension had been backdated.

Rioli was provisionally suspended during the 2019 AFL finals campaign after allegedly tampering with the sample, and tested positive to cannabis a fortnight later.

He was found guilty of three breaches of the AFL's anti-doping code, two relating to tampering with a urine sample and one for the use of cannabis.

The anti-doping tribunal determined the two-year suspension would begin from the date of his first sample on August 20, 2019, meaning he could be free to play in the Eagles' last home and away game in 2021.

He will be eligible to train with West Coast from June 20.

In a statement, the club said the tribunal took into account Rioli's personal circumstances, the fact he was not seeking to gain a competitive advantage, and that his breach was certain to be detected.

It said Rioli had also admitted to the violations.

Three months before the forward was set to return to football, Rioli will face a Darwin court on Wednesday charged with possessing a schedule 2 dangerous drug, less than traffickable quantity, in a public place.

A Northern Territory Police media release from April 23 said a drug detection dog was conducting screening operations at Darwin Airport when 25 grams of cannabis was allegedly found in a man's pants.

Cannabis really needs to be legalised.
This blokes career is destroyed for using a herb that is legal in 25 countries around the world, including; USA, Canada, Switzerland, Russia, Jamaica, Estonia, Ukraine, Spain, Portugal and Italy to name a few.

What a shame his brilliance may never be witnessed again on the big stage.

^ Totally agree Skids. It's just ridiculous if his footy career is destroyed by something so innane in the great scheme of things.

It's hardly a performance boosting substance - just ask Brent Crosswell!! Smile
