From the ABC blog:

Quote:
NSW Premier says it's not helpful to comment on other states' decisions. Immediately comments on other state's decision.

Dominic Perrottet says NSW is following the federal plan, just like Victoria and Queensland. He said NSW is not 'going its own way', contrary to some commentary from outside.

And it's not helpful for other premiers to provide commentary on what other states are doing. Then said this about WA's decision to delay the border reopening...

"A lot of people have shed tears today as a result of that decision."

406 deaths in Australia in the last 7 days - that's nearly 4 times as many deaths as occurred in any week during the "Delta" event. To put that in context it took from the start of the pandemic until 24 August 2021 to reach 984 total deaths in Australia. It took a little more than 3 months for the next 1,000 deaths (by 26 November 2021) but has taken under 2 months for the next 1,000 deaths (2,984 by today, 22 January 2022).

No surprise that WA's told the rest of the country to "%^&* off", really.

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan’s decision to indefinitely delay the state’s reopening — effectively marooning the population and locking out the rest of world — should not come as a shock to those who have been watching our leaders closely in the last few weeks.

As the February 5 reopening date loomed, it was clear the wheels were starting to fall off. The Premier and his ministers continually declined to provide the state’s preliminary Omicron modelling.
Questions around furloughing and how the virus would be managed in the community went unanswered. Medical union concerns that hospitals were already full and had no surge capacity were constantly dismissed.

Nearly a $6 Billion budget surplus and a 3rd world public health system. If he was actually worried about people dying, he would have invested some money into it.

WA aren't locked up, they just have the rest of the country and world locked out. It's going to bite them in the arse eventually, probably winter.

Small correction - there were ultimately 93 new deaths reported in Australia yesterday, so the 7-day total was 411 and the total deaths were 2,989 by yesterday.

Nah, they'll be alright. Living "normally" for the last 2 years while the rest of the world suffered cannot be overstated. It's disgusting that they have allowed their health dept to fall into such a state but really, the rest of us aren't that far ahead.

Yeah, but when they do reopen they're going to get the surge everyone is hs had and they aren't prepared to deal with it.

Meanwhile, It seems hospitalisations in NSW have peaked and started to fall while Victoria has stopped accelerating and seems to have plateaued.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-22/nsw-covid-omicron-hospital-peak/100773720

NSW managed far better than worse case scenario and better than best case.

We may get another spike after schools re-open but all the signs are there that things are on the improve.

The 3,053 deaths from COVID are in a period where there has been around 320,000 deaths. So COVID currently represents less than 1% of all deaths in Australia over the past two years.

And with a population of 25 million, over two years, COVID has killed 0.01% of the population.

To give you an idea, if you knew everyone at a full MCG, around 622 of those people will die during the year, of which 6 will die from COVID.
