"World No.556 David Micheluzzi has backed up his rankings rant with a sizzling Australian Open first round to capture a commanding clubhouse lead over the chasing pack.

Sixth at the Australian PGA Championship after winning last month's WA PGA, Micheluzzi continued his hot form with a seven-under-par 63 at Victoria Golf Club to set a cracking early pace on Thursday."

"Fellow Australians Connor McKinney and Zinyo Garcia signed for 67s, while American Gunner Wiebe carded a 69 at neighbouring Kingston Heath - the other sandbelt club co-hosting the Open - to also sit at three under.

With seven birdies, Adam Scott managed a one-under 71 at Kingston Heath despite lamenting four bogeys and a double."

Scotty shot an excellent 63, to be equal leader with Micheluzzi, on 8 under.

A few on 5 under. Tied for 3rd.

Min Lee is 2 under.

Smith disappointed again. He's on plus 2.

"Adam Scott has captured the Australian Open clubhouse lead with a spectacular finish to his course-record-equalling second round at Victoria Golf Club.

Delighting the big gallery, Scott drained a long-range putt from off the green for eagle on the final hole to ice his flawless seven-under-par round of 63 on Friday.

The former world No.1 vaulted to eight under for the championship and trailed Victorian David Micheluzzi by just a shot when he signed off, with the first round leader still with two holes to play.

It was a brilliant bounce-back after Scott's self-confessed "disgusting" first-round 70 at Kingston Heath, which featured four bogeys and a double."
