You talk about the subcontinent. There they can choose 2 or 3 spinners who can bowl 40 overs an innings each without breaking down. Can't do that in Oz.

e.g. NZ v. Pakistan, 2nd Test: NZ played 3 spinners... Looked like it worked pretty well. Almost got the victory.

Ajaz Patel 3/88 (17) & 0/32 (7) --- bit expensive both innings!
Michael Bracewell 0/87 (26) & 4/75 (20)
Ish Sodhi 3/95 (27) & 2/59 (18 )

And look at how foreign spinners do in Oz.

"West Indies tweaker Roston Chase took only three wickets across the two-match series to begin the summer and had particularly expensive first innings, posting 0-117 and 0-140.

While South Africa's back-up spinner Simon Harmer looked promising on day one in Sydney, he finished day two at 0-109.
..."

Maharaj: "Obviously, you're probably not going to get as much spin as you're used to anywhere else in the world.

"The one thing you can work with is the bounce but also sometimes when you're behind the eight-ball, it's very difficult to bowl in a certain way and you bowl with spread fields."

(cricket.com.au)

The only wicket Maharaj took in the whole series was his bunny, FTB Smith.

Foreign spinners do not do well in Australia if they cannot cope with proper wickets.

The figures from the South Africa tour (posted in the correct thread) are as follows:

Final stats:

Batting - South Africa (player, runs, average) - minimum 50 runs

Bavuma 185 - 37.00

Verreynne 168 - 33.60

Erwee 112 - 22.40

Maharaj 86 - 17.00

Zondo 81 - 20.25

Jansen 77 - 15.40

Elgar 56 - 9.33

Batting - Australia (player, runs, average) - minimum 50 runs

Smith 231 - 57.75

Warner 213 - 53.25

Head 213 - 53.25

Khawaja 209 - 69.66

Carey 133 - 133.00

Labuschagne 109 - 36.33

Green 69 - 69.00

Bowling - South Africa (player, wickets, average)

Rabada 11 - 32.00

Nortje 7 - 31.00

Jansen 4 - 50.00

Ngidi 2 - 66.50

Maharaj 1 - 260.00

Bowling - Australia (player, wickets, average)

Cummins 12 - 16.91

Lyon 10 - 26.20

Starc 8 - 21.00

Boland 7 - 17.85

Green 5 - 9.40

Hazlewood 5 - 11.40

Smith 1 - 17.00

Head 1 - 25.00

Lyon took 10 wickets, Maharaj 1 (at the pathetic average of 260). It is not the fault of our wickets if a foreign spinner can't actually bowl at the required standard to play in a Test.

Even at home, where he was taken almost all of his Test wickets, Maharaj only averages 31.55 with the ball. In Australia, he averages 84.4, having toured twice for a total of 5 wickets. In India, he averages 85.66. His average is better in countries that do not boast Test-standard batting lineups - so, 12.44 in the West Indies and 22.10 in New Zealand - but mostly he doesn't do anything in foreign Tests because he isn't actually much of a bowler.

The variation can be neatly illustrated by Ponting's record against Kumble.
Overall, Ponting averaged 88.57 against Kumble's bowling. However, the breakdown showed that Ponting's average against him was 174.66 in Australia but just 24.00 in India. Plenty of spinners could get wickets in Australia. Kumble wasn't one of them.

... Not sure of his numbers, but didn't the SL magician, Murali, also find no joy on Oz wickets ?

^ Averaged 75.41 in Australia and 45.45 in India. Murali's numbers are padded by all those Tests against Zimbabwe (87 wickets at 16.86) and Bangladesh (89 wickets at 13.37). Even with those two sub-par opponents, his average is 50% higher against them away than it is in Sri Lanka.

And, Lazza, in the 2nd ODI that followed, NZ used a "spin quartet". Shocked

Okay, one was Glenn Phillips (who took a wicket), but three were specialist spinners. They bowled 30 out of the 43 overs it took NZ to bowl out Pakistan.

Has any country ever played three specialist spinners in an ODI in Oz? Question

I can't even remember two... Maybe an old SCG ODI??
