Melbourne were 0–6 a fortnight ago, and have since beaten two finalists to ensure their place in the finals. So, bring it on!

Wheras we were 1-5 and lost to two finalists in the last month to miss out on a top 2 spot.

Those stats don’t really mean much. For example it shows that the Swans have the best record against top 8 sides, and yet we only lost to them by two points with half of our side out.I’d be very confident of beating them in a final in Melbourne, especially with some players back.

I haven't read any of this.... why?

Because as of September, it means nothing... zilch, zero, absolutely **** all!

Why it is even an issue is beyond me.

They are QAULIFYING games... get it? They determine your finishing position at the end of the H & A season, which then determines, if and who you play at the business end of the season.

Do you think anyone remembers who beat Northerly when he was a maiden runner... or who was in front of him at the 600 in the Cox Plate? NO!

In the past we have occasionaly knocked off a finals side thru the season but let a Brisbane or a Carlton roll us
This year we have beaten sides we should have —but as mentioned from today onwards that counts for little

that statement could be a fitting response to 95% of what you write skids. In fact it would probably be a fair response to 95% of what everyone says. bizarre for you to focus on this one statement.

you are always trying to leave a mark skids.

Ok, I'll play Wink

You could look at this another way.

We didn't lose v Port or Crows ..... Richmond & Sydney (North too) Did.
We didn't lose v Lions.... Hawthorn Did.
We didn't lose v Melb or North.... WCE Did.
We didn't lose v Essendon, Bulldogs or Crows.... Cats Did.
We didn't lose v North, Melb, Ess & draw with Saints.... GWS Did.
We didn't lose v Port or Saints.... Melbourne Did.

Ahh, I see this debate this rages on and it's become even more meaningless. This right here proves how little it means. The AFL is a veritable 18 team orgy. Everybody is getting some at different times. We beat the teams that beat the teams we didn't beat.

I hope it's not lost on anybody that Melbourne could've easily finished top 4 and in fact they probably should've finished second if they hadn't of dropped some games they should've won. Or you could apply the same logic to the teams that just missed out on the eight. We lost to Geelong who by all accounts, are lucky to be in the eight, so many footy opinions like life are often a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing" to quote the Bard.

We could sit here trying to prognosticate over and over again or we could simply wait to see how it all plays out next weekend. The argument might hold more water if we were completely outclassed by the good sides but we weren't. And to leave the mitigating factors that may have contributed to those losses on the cutting room floor of your mind, only makes the argument reductive.

Raw stats and data is not always the most sophisticated or nuanced way of viewing things. Other things need to be taken into account.

While I get some people's frustration with this statistic, what it does show is that, unlike other teams in the top 8, we haven't yet shown we can take it up to the best teams. For instance, West Coast and GWS have been able to knock off Richmond; Sydney (twice) and Melbourne have been able to beat West Coast; and Sydney, Richmond, West Coast and GWS have all taken down Hawthorn; but we've been fairly soundly beaten by all three of those clubs (twice in Richmond's case). So, if you're Sydney or GWS right now, you'd feel pretty confident about meeting a top 4 team in weeks 2 or 3, whereas there are still a lot of question marks over our ability to match it with those teams. But we're only just starting to get our best team back on the park, and I'm confident that we can find a new gear in the finals.

i think this speaks to a great quality that the pies had this year. consistency. And this is a big credit to Bucks. We didnt have a down week where we checked it in and gave less than full effort. I felt like every week we went out there our team gave 100% of themselves. We dint always play our best footy, but we were always out there working hard for the win.

Having watched other quality teams lose to crappy teams, the same cannot be said for them.

Whether giving 100% effort for all 22 games has been a contributing factor in our horrific run with injuries is for others to speculate on, but there is no doubt the pies played a dependable and consistent brand of footy.

This doesnt answer the question as to whether they can compete with the big boys (afterall, the other team they beat in the finals is the other team that had an easy draw and didnt beat too many teams with flag aspirations).

I think this is it in a nutshell David. Will be interesting to see how we go.

Just not good enough this year i am afraid. Especially not given the injuries we now have.

Reload with Lynch and May and consider what to do with the Chronic.

By the way, percentage matters to this analysis. If Geelong had a better percentage, we'd be 0-7!!
