Yep, me too. One of my cherished boyhood moments.
I recall sneaking into the one eyed stand to marvel at Peter McKenna. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

He sure was a favourite for me and my best friend, both of us teenage girls at the time. Say no more!!!
Back in those days, you were allowed to run onto the ground after the siren at Vic Park...how the players got off the ground safely I don't know. My goal was always to see if I could actually touch Peter McKenna. Embarassing isn't it!!
Oh and I danced with him once during a progressive waltz at the Collingwood Ball!!!
That teenage hormonal behaviour aside, he was a truly a magnificent full forward and a joy to watch play. |

I have been watching Collingwood for 60 years.
A long long time.
My earliest memory was footy in the 50's under the scoreboard at Vic Park.
It was quite violent in those days.
But I rememeber Macca kicking goal after goal.
It seemed to be the thirs quarter when Macca run wild.
It was Thompson tap down to Price and a kick to a leading Macca
and then a drop punt through the goal.
It was pure beauty.
The only player who I thought could kick better than Macca was Mr Davis.
I once saw him kick 8 goals straight at south melbourne ground in the 80's in the mud.
Bloody amazing effort. |

Fairly sure he also had 4 goals on the board about 5 minutes into a game against Richmond at Victoria Park.
I have vivid memories of sitting behind Craig Davis as he kicked a curving torp goal from a long way out on the left half forward flank at Waverley. Upon returning home and watching the replay Peter Landy delivered the immortal line thats not going to be a goal - and its a goal. |

Obviously the great man was my hero too. As my pic<-- attests. Bloody amazing to think how close some of us must've been all those years ago. Like 5 from the wing, my first game was also Coll v Hawks at Glenferrie. My grandad was a mad hawks fan, had a season ticket, & got lumbered with taking his 4yo grandson several times. My Nanna always made us curried egg sangers & a thermos of tea. When it was cold we shared the crocheted blanket over our knees. Still love those, my sister made me one a couple of years ago. My wife & I fought over it until she got her own.
I used to wear my long-sleeved no.6 to school, Even wore it on photo day in about Grade 4, so thats out there in eternity, but there were those Monday mornings when I'd show up to cries of "WHAT HAPPENED to COLLINGWOOD". Damn clever stuff!
My Dad was a member at Footscray JUST soccer club & amazingly so was Peter the Great, so I got to meet I'm a few times. I was always dumbstruck, & yes, stuck for words. Thats a very cool Magpie jacket I have on in the pic to left. I was very proud to have that photo. Still am.
So do ANY of you remember the PETER MCKENNA APPRECIATION DAY the cub held at Vikky Park? Many of the players were there, & it featured
Supernaut, Hush, Acka Dacka, & incredibly, the last act was MARK bloody HOLDEN!
He showed up in a helicopter, strewing roses to the screaming girls below, big wanker! I still cant figure out exactly when it was, but the bands should dictate the year, 75-76? I think '76. I always thought it was the year he left to wear that GOD AWFUL No.27 in blue. I was heartbroken when Magpie fans booed him, which is why I HATE that practice to this day. _________________ "If at first you dont succeed...
