Amongst all the joy and relief felt after the final siren blew, I also felt so very sad for Tay. To see the tears streaming down his face was heart-breaking. Same for Johnny Noble.
The hard luck stories of footy can be really cruel. There's Billy Frampton with a premiership medal around his neck (all glory to him - not saying he shouldn't have been selected), but Johnny Noble who has played so consistently with so much courage and ferocious determination over the past two years had such a look of anguish on his face. I remember how he won the game aqainst Adelaide with a brilliant goal, but could just not retain his place to the end of the season. So heart -wrenching for him.

How Adams and McStay coped with mixed emotions

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/mcrae-reveals-hidden-message-he-carried-under-collar-of-his-grand-final-shirt-20231001-p5e8tl.html

'Hard-luck duo Taylor Adams and Dan McStay spent a couple of emotion-charged hours together at Adams’ home coming to terms with their injury fate after Collingwood’s grand final triumph.

They were side by side in the triumphant Magpie changerooms before their teammates arrived to belt out back-to-back renditions of the theme song, but were notably absent as journalists, broadcasters, fans and loved ones piled in.
...

“It was high emotions early on. There was elation when we first ran onto the ground [afterwards], and hugged ‘Pendles’ [Scott Pendlebury], Steele [Sidebottom] and ‘Howey’ [Jeremy Howe] — all the guys I’ve played a lot of footy with – then it hit home that I wasn’t out on the ground and part of it completely,” Adams told The Age.

“But the boys and Craig [McRae] made us feel really valued and a part of it, which was really good, then we had a few beers to celebrate last night, and a lot of singing and dancing and carrying on with family and friends.”
...

“We shed a few tears and a bit of emotion, then we brushed it off and said, ‘Let’s get on with it and go celebrate with the boys’. It was a great night,” Adams said.'

In the end it wasn't about trade value but facilitating a new start for a favorite son and a true and loyal servant of the club.

Well played Tay and fare the well in future.

It's not about value it's about smoothing the path for a loyal clubman.

Now that it happened and confirmed and the club has said farewell, reality is here.
It's sad to see Tay go. We wish him all the best.

Now it's excitement and expection time: Shultz to come to Collingwood.
A spot opens up for Macrae.

He'll get a round of applause from me when we play Sydney.

Well, the first time, anyway...

33 is fair - he wanted security that we couldn't promise, and given his age and injury profile, helping a loyal clubman extend his career by 2 years is a fair outcome all round.
