Medical advice was he needed to retire or he risked a shoulder “replacement” so pretty serious consequences if he played on and reinjured his shoulder. Docs and club asked him to hang up the boots for that reason.

It is a very wise and thoughtful person who knows when to 'hang them up'.

Roughead has given yeoman service to the Magpies and the Dogs and can hold his head up high, secure in the knowledge that he retires a very respected human being and Premiership player.

The Magpies could do a lot worse than appoint him to a player support role in mentoring the younger players in how to play the game.

We now have two list spots for the mid-season draft- perhaps one can be dedicated to a 200cm defender and the other to a very pacey midfielder.

Thanks Roughy for your selfless service to two clubs.

Floreat Pica

W.L He is held in high esteem at not only Footscray and Collingwood and I’m willing to bet also across the competition

He has committed to fulfilling the role of another respected Collingwood person (Levi Greenwood) namely Rehabilitation advisor and any other
role club deems needed

There are players in AFL and then there are club people and our Roughy is definitely club environment driven

Clubs who have these are fortunate and it’s advisable to embrace them as a bonus

Injury prone i guess, and he can see the Magpies only going for kids now, and hes done the right thing by the Club too. He was a very good pickup, he did well with us, he would make a great assistant Coach oneday, for our Backs., i reckon.

Sad day for the club, but your health must come first.

With a bit of luck, could have played in a Collingwood flag, but he has one from his Bulldogs days.

He was a great pick up for us at the time and is a real good character to have around a footy club.

I believe he has what it takes to get into coaching, so hopefully we see him doing something in the future.

Move Kelly into the 23 jumper now.

Reckon he’d be happy to see a new back man emerge in Murph
