Latif drops legal threat against Aussies
Reuters - 13 February 2003

Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif withdrew a threat to sue the Australia team on Thursday after they had accused him of making a racist remark.

Latif was cleared of the charge after Australia's 82-run win over Pakistan in their World Cup Group A match on Tuesday.

Match referee Clive Lloyd said there had not been sufficient evidence to prove the allegation.

Media reports on Wednesday said Latif, who was accused of making a remark to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, was considering legal action.

But the player told Reuters on Thursday: "I have had second thoughts about the whole affair and decided not to pursue this matter.

"I have cooled down. I was unhappy about being accused but this could harm the game and the World Cup, and I have always had good relations with Adam."

Earlier Pakistan team manager Shaharyar Khan had said: "For the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan cricket management, the matter is closed.

"We are satisfied with the match referee's decision. If Rashid Latif was to pursue legal action, he will do it in a personal capacity."

Latif had said immediately after the hearing that he had "no hard feelings towards anyone, including Adam Gilchrist and the Australia team. I just want to concentrate on the World Cup".

He appeared, however, to change his mind later in the evening, leading to reports that he might sue.

Gilchrist had echoed Latif's initial reaction. He said he had been "shocked by the comment I believe I heard", adding that the pair had since shaken hands.

"Rashid and I have had a fantastic playing relationship and friendship over the years and I hope it can continue that way," Gilchrist said.

Unusual for wicket keepers not to get along.....normally they have a close bond with each other. Same applies with apin bowlers

New Zealand have scored 7/241 against the West Indies with Astle (46), Cairns (37), MuCullum (36 n.o.), Adams (35 n.o.) and Fleming (25) all getting amongst the runs.

Hinds did best for the Windies with 3/35 from his 10 overs.

Astle get an appauling caught behind decision Adams and McAllum batter brilliantly near the end and scored 16 off the last over. I think Chris Harris' spot must be under question!!

Well, JLC, seems you've got some pull with the Kiwis.

Following New Zealand's loss in the opening game, you wrote -"New Zealand would be VERY disappointed with that batting effort. May have been a mistake not to play Vettori."

I thought you'd really lost it because Daniel Vettori is a spin bowler with a ODI batting average of 11!

But, no! In tonight's match, they opened the batting with Fleming and VETTORI!! Unbelievable! Absolutely unbelievable.

Countries prepare for three years to challenge for the World Cup of cricket and the Black Caps come up with that! Well, Vettori got his average. In fact he improved it. He scored 12.

As New Zealand is your selection to WIN the Cup, I reckon you'd better come up with something a bit better than that, m8!

The Windies are in trouble with the loss of three quick wickets. Andre Adams (2/27 from 6) dismissed both openers and Brian Lara was run out soon after for 2.

Ok my New Zealand comments were seperate.

1. They would have been disappointed by their batting effort in their first game as only Styris made runs. The other batsman i think have forgotten how to build an innings.

2. They should have played Vettori as their bowling attack lacked variety in the first game. Vettori is a very good spin bowler and gives the bowling attack some balance.

I personally think they may use Andre Adams as an opener in the batting like they did against India. However N.Z. are not afraid to mix and match their batting order and even their bowling attack.

New Zealand should get better as the tournament progresses. The problem is the series against India didn't provide much benefit to them. Pitches were too bowler friendly and the bowlers didnt really have to earn their wickets. The batsmen were not in the middle long enough to get into any form.

It was a good victory against the West Indies. However N.Z. still face a tough path to the second round. Chris Cairns, Nathan Astle and Shane Bond hold the key to making the finals. Personally i think Aussies would want to avoid playing New Zealand in the elimination stages. Firstly the Kiwis always lift when playing the Aussies. Secondly they are not intimidated when playing the Aussies

I am still sticking with them as my selection.

Plus with N.Z and Eng not wanting to play in Kenya and Zimbabwe it sort of compromises both pools. Zimbabwe could get an armchair ride into the next round by virtue of default. That would be a great pity if this eventuated

Secondly for tomorrow nights game against India i would like everyone to select the changes (if any ) that they would make to the aussie team.

In: Lehmann

Out: Maher

The West Indies fell short by 20 runs in their game with New Zealand.

Sarwan (75) and Jacobs (50) added 98 for the 7th. wicket but the damage was done earlier as the strong Windies middle order was ripped out - Lara (2), Chanderpaul (2) and Hooper (3) - before Sarwan and Powell (16) began the rescue with 34 for the 6th. wicket.

Andre Adams starred for The Black Caps with 4/44 from 9.4 overs and a run out to add to his powerful batting effort.

Adams did well to recover as in his first over he was smashed for 3 or 4 boundaries so that was a great comeback

HEADLINE: JLC SELECTS LEHMANN!

Couldn't resist, m8, just looks so good. And ... I agree!!

Looks like the only way the Aussies can go. They can hardly drop Symmo or The Freak to include Bevo. One more game's recovery time can only be a good thing, anyway. Bic is a chance to get a run if any of the quicks have a niggle.

What an amazing first over! 4 wickets!!

Bangladesh is 5/60 after 12 overs and Chaminda Vaas has 5/14 from 6.

Nuwan Zoysa also took a hatty with his first three deliveries in a Test match - against Zimbabwe, 1999.

That will be a great trivia question in the future I feel sorry for some of the minnows but they will get better im sure. It wasn't so long ago that Sri Lanka were easy beats but they have come a long way and won a World Cup Kenya i think is the best out of all the minor countries
