Maybe for some people, not for everyone though.

If you have an addictive personality, maybe.

I have always set budgets for punting and keep a track on how I'm travelling. I'm almost $10k up this year. For me, it's a bit of fun and gives a bit more 'life' to sports events.
I had no trouble giving up cigarettes almost 15 years ago and giving up drinking 2 years ago was the easiest thing I've ever done.

I've tried almost every drug you can get your hands on (not H) but never been addicted to any.
I have been a pot smoker for 40 years, the last 20 years I've been working FIFO, so have to pass random drug tests. I know when I have to stop so that there is no issue.

I must say though, since quitting alcohol, I never do the impulsive betting that would sometimes creep into my punting.

Traits of People with High Risk of Developing Addiction

Nevertheless, there are traits that can be recognized in people who have a higher risk of becoming addicted to psychoactive substances rather than just being able to moderate behaviour around these types of substances. People with this higher addiction risk include those who are:

Related to others who have developed addiction
Experiencing other mental health disorders
Adventurous and risk-taking
Disconnected and cautious
Obsessive and compulsive
Apathetic
Unable to self-regulate

That's great! Cool

What ROI does that come out to? Are your winnings mainly from sport or from racing?

The AFL’s ‘engine’: How gambling money underpins footy

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/the-afl-s-engine-how-gambling-money-underpins-footy-20220214-p59wa7.html

"The millions have flowed to the AFL and in 2020 it inked another five-year sponsorship deal with Sportsbet. It costs Sportsbet between $12 million and $15 million a year, though a senior AFL source, who did not wish to be identified, told The Age the AFL only received $6 million to $8 million of that.

But sponsorship is just one of the four ways gambling money pours into Australia’s most popular football competition.

The TV stations that pay for AFL broadcast rights are partly funded by the huge advertising spending of the betting companies. The on-ground advertising of gambling companies — which could have been abolished by the Andrews government — is worth up to $3 million to the AFL.
...

The AFL downplays the value of this tie-up, saying the $10 million sponsorship is a small proportion of the game’s $100 million income from sponsorships, but Tripp says the AFL imprimatur helped revolutionise the range of betting products he could offer. It’s one of the deals that has helped take Sportsbet from a market value of $250,000 in 2005 to its current $12 billion to $14 billion.

The bookmakers also pay between $1 million and $3 million for gambling at the ground.

And then there is the TV rights. ...

Without $47 million in gambling ad revenue, industry insiders say it’s doubtful Seven could afford the approximately $150 million it pays to the AFL each year for the broadcast rights – by far the biggest contributor to the AFL’s coffers. More would flow from gambling companies via Fox though those figures cannot be estimated."

After 2 and a bit rounds, we could be looking at a Melbourne / Carlton GF

At this stage, I think Melbourne and Brisbane are the benchmark clubs.

Carlscum might improve but no way known they’d make the Granny in 2022.

I'd love to see Carlton in the Grand Final. I reckon they could do a 2007 Port Adelaide for us - that'd be worth watching.
