Australia have chosen the same squad as the one which completed the World Cup campaign.

Bevan, Hauritz, Harvey, Symonds and Martyn will join their team-mates during the last (4th.) Test, after which Langer, Love, MacGill and Noffke will return to Oz.

Injury doesn't heal fast enough for Martyn to join West Indies tour
Lynn McConnell - 2 May 2003

Damien Martyn's race to recover from a hand injury to be ready for the one-day international leg of Australia's tour of the West Indies ended today.

He has been ruled out of the Travelex tour and Michael Clarke, who is already on the tour for the Test leg, will remain with the side.

Martyn suffered his injury, a broken right index finger, while in the field during Australia's five-wicket semi-final victory over Kenya at the World Cup on March 15.

Martyn had been receiving specialist treatment since returning from South Africa but a medical review of the injury showed that while it had healed, joint stiffness would prevent him from batting for another four weeks.

Martyn said that missing the Test series against the West Indies had been a bigger blow than missing the one-dayers.

"As time went by it became apparent that things weren't going to be entirely right for the one-dayers either," he said.

"Having had some time to contemplate the injury, I have been able to come to terms with sitting on the sidelines.

"I guess the selectors could have ruled me out of the squad earlier, but they gave me as much time as possible to prove my fitness, which I appreciate.

"I'm naturally disappointed that I won't be on the plane to the Caribbean, but it's important that I allow the treatment to take its course and get things right for good.

"I'm making steady progress, which is encouraging, and I'm really looking getting myself 100% right for the Top End Tour in Cairns and Darwin," he said.

Clarke, 22, made his one-day international debut for Australia in the VB Series match against England at the Adelaide Oval in January, scoring an unbeaten 39 runs from 47 balls, and taking 1-24 from seven overs with his left-arm orthodox spin.

Speaking from Barbados, Clarke said: I feel really sorry for Damien that he still isn't fit, after what must be a frustrating time on the sidelines.

"However, I'm thrilled to be able to stay on with the Australian side and hopefully play some part in the one-day series.

"Just being around the senior players on tour has been a terrific learning experience and I'm grateful for being given the chance to continue that.

"The one-day international that I played in Adelaide in January was the highlight of my career to date, so I'm really excited that there's the opportunity for more matches in national colours," he said.

A Very young inexperienced Windies sqaud. Should be interesting to see if they can cope with the presure put on by the Aussies.

I think that it is a good thing though, giving some of the young players a chance to show their stuff against the best in the world. It will test their character, and seperate the men from the boys.

It will be interesting to see who puts their hand up.

Australia eager for revenge as one-day series kicks off
Freddie Auld - 16 May 2003

After the euphoria of their epic and record-breaking victory in the fourth Test against Australia in Antigua, West Indies must now show some more of the same energy and enterprise in the one-day international series, starting in Jamaica on Saturday, or the Aussies will bring them back down to earth as fiercely as a Glenn McGrath tongue-lashing.

West Indies go into the seven-match series fielding a largely inexperienced squad, with an average age of just under 25. There are three players from outside the Test side: the World Cup duo of Ricardo Powell and Corey Collymore, and the uncapped Ryan Hurley, an offspinning allrounder from Barbados, but no Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose brilliant hundred paved the way for Tuesday's historic victory.

Chanderpaul fractured the middle finger on his left hand while taking to catch Adam Gilchrist during Australia's first innings at St. John's, and he will now miss the entire one-day series against Australia and, possibly, next month's series against Sri Lanka as well. "The fracture was complex and required urgent surgery," said Ricky Skerritt, the West Indies team manager. "The best medical opinion indicates that Shiv will be out of cricket for at least six weeks."

Ridley Jacobs will also miss out. Saturday's fixture would have been his 119th ODI, but he has been given more time to recover from the groin injury which caused him to miss the second and third Tests in Trinidad and Barbados. His place will be taken by Carlton Baugh, who stood in for him in those matches and is one of five new caps in the West Indian squad, the other four being Hurley, Dave Bernard, Devon Smith and Omari Banks – whose unbeaten 47 on the final day at Antigua was a performance of huge maturity that few other 20-year-olds could have emulated.

The mechanical Daren Ganga is not required, despite his twin centuries in the Test series, but Pedro Collins, who was dropped after the second Test in Trinidad, misses out as well – quite a fall from grace for a player who opened West Indies's bowling in the first match of World Cup just three months ago.

For Australia though, it's the same old faces, as they pull on their gold jerseys for the first time since their crushing World Cup win in Johannesburg. In come Michael Bevan, Andrew Symonds, Ian Harvey and Nathan Hauritz, while Stuart MacGill, Ashley Noffke and Martyn Love nip over to England for a spot of county cricket, and Steve Waugh and Justin Langer fly home.

Ricky Ponting will return to action as well, after shaking off that virus which caused him to miss the Antigua defeat. His last one-day innings – 140 not out from 121 balls – earned him the Man of the Match award in the World Cup final, and with centuries in each of his three Tests this series, West Indies need no reminder of his destructive capabilities.

To date, Australia have won 10, lost 12 and tied one of their 23 ODIs in the Caribbean, and last time round in 1998-99 the seven-match series ended all square at three-all. But since then, Australia have progressed right to the top of world cricket with two World Cup wins, while apart from a spirited but ultimately doomed World Cup campaign and a 3-2 series win in India last year, West Indies haven't made the strides they would have wanted.

So as long as Brian Lara doesn't single-handedly take the Aussies apart, and no-one on either side mentions Mrs McGrath, Australia should have no problems adding this series to their routine 3-1 Test win.

West Indies Brian Lara (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Omari Banks, Tino Best, David Bernard, Corey Collymore, Mervyn Dillon, Vasbert Drakes, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hurley, Ridley Jacobs, Jermaine Lawson, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith.

Australia Ricky Ponting (capt), Adam Gilchrist, Michael Bevan, Andy Bichel, Jason Gillespie, Nathan Hauritz, Ian Harvey, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Darren Lehmann, Jimmy Maher, Michael Clarke, Glenn McGrath, Andrew Symonds.

Couragous Cloke says:

ok ok ok, so we cant bowl, but atleast we can bat

the ODI series starts on saturday night or sunday morning at 12:30.

if your an aussie fan (which 99% of u are) i think you'll enjoy tuning into the 7 ODI games knowing that australia could make over 300 in every single 1 of them. Westindies only chance is if they improve their fielding and "Jumping" Jermaine Lawson can run rampid. personally im looking forward to watching the great man "Lara" again and am disapointed to hear that shiv aint playing because of a broken finger. i think the seven games could be very 1 sided. Good luck to both teams and lets all hope there as entertaining as the last test in Antiga!

GO WINDIES!

Just bring it !! I can't wait.

I reckon Chris Gayle will be a danger to the Aussies. He's rated as 3rd. best all-rounder after Kallis and Pollock in ODIs.

Lawson Out Until After Review

by RYAN NARAINE

Worried about the mental anguish that could accompany the intense scrutiny of Jermaine Lawson's bowling action, the West Indies selectors have left out the fast bowler from the side for the first three ODIs.

Officially, the WICB has only announced Lawson will miss the first ODI because he "has not sufficiently recovered from the injury to his lower back" but insiders say the plan was hatched earlier this week to have Lawson sit out the first three ODIs and then have his action studied by the Bowling Review Committee (BRC) when the series shifts to Trinidad & Tobago on May 24-25.

The WICB's Bowling Review Committee is made up of Michael Holding (chairman), Clyde Butts, David Holford, Brian Davis and Dr Terry Ali (Motion Specialist) and the decision to have the review done in T&T was made to facilitate attendance by the entire committee.

Holding, who is working as a TV commentator, is making arrangements for the TWI camera crew to help with the specialised video footage needed during the review process which one source says may be held at the indoor nets at the Sir Frank Worrell Development Centre in Trinidad.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has outlined very specific protocols by which the review must be conducted and Holding was an obvious choice to chair the WICB's BRC because he has already worked on one in Shoaib Akhtar's case.

Although the review can be conducted during a cricket match, sources say the WICB made a decision to avoid the public scrutiny associated with having Lawson bowl so soon after his action was reported to the ICC by the standing umpires.

During the analysis in Trinidad, Holding's committee will have Lawson bowl from his normal run-up while two synchronised high-speed cameras operating at a minimum of 200 frames per second (250 maximum) will be recording.

The ICC rules call for a minimum shutter speed of 1000Hz to prevent blurred images. "The cameras and computer to be operated and positioned in appropriate positions to facilitate a subsequent three-dimensional analysis of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and ball," according to the protocol.

The commitee is mandated to evaluate Lawson's bowling action and conduct an Anthropometric Assessment of both the bowling & non-bowling arms. The committee will study arm angles before and during delivery.

The ICC protocol also calls for the bowler to wear no clothing on the torso to enable manual digitisation of the joint centres during the data collection period.

Lawsonn will be required to bowl four ‘normal – good length deliveries’, four ‘yorkers’ and four ‘bouncers’, which will all be recorded. During this process, there will be consultation and feedback between Lawson and the entire committee, with Holding doubling as adviser/coach.

The committee will be calculating 3D analysis for each delivery and the ICC requires that effort be made to ensure that the player is bowling "as close to match pace as possible."

"This can be measured after each delivery if the equipment is available (Radar Gun), or measured via the 3D data during analysis. If deliveries are not at a suitable speed (so as to represent match conditions) then the data shall be invalid," the ICC warned.

After all the video is reviewed and the 3D analysis is completed, the committee will present a report of its opinion and findings to the ICC.

Here is the team for the first ODI on Saturday:

Brian Lara (captain)
Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain)
Omari Banks
Carlton Baugh, Jr.
Corey Collymore
Mervyn Dillon
Vasbert Drakes
Chris Gayle
Ricardo Powell
Marlon Samuels
Devon Smith
David Bernard, Jr. (12th man)

Lara won the toss and sent the Aussies in.

They had scored 35 in 6 overs when Gilchrist (21) skied one from Dillon to square leg.

After 8.3 overs, the score is 1/47.

Oops. Hayden (7) just got a big edge to slip from Dillon. 2/47.

Australia made 5/270 with Ponting and Lehmann getting half centuries and Bevan (43 from 44 balls) and Harvey (48 from 30) batting well at the death.

The Windies batsmen all got starts but no one played the big innings. Gayle and Powell both got 37. Smith batted at first drop for 26 and Lara, 23.

In the 24th. over, rain stopped play. After the rain, the Windies revised total was 208 from 37 overs.

They went very close, losing by 2 runs with Sarwan 47 n.o.from 34 balls.

Harvey completed a good double with 3/37, including Lara, but somehow missed Man of the Match. That went to ponting. Lee took 2/52.

Harvey's heroics keep Australia's unbeaten run intact
Andrew Miller - 17 May 2003

A magnificent and typically unorthodox allround performance from Ian Harvey proved too good for a spirited West Indian side, as Australia extended their unbeaten run in one-day internationals to 18 matches in a rain-affected encounter in Kingston. The end result was flatteringly close – after Harvey's exploits, West Indies did not realistically threaten Australia's total, with 16 runs required from Brett Lee's final over, and seven from the final ball alone.

Selected ahead of the resting Jason Gillespie, Harvey clubbed a vital 48 not out from 30 balls to lift Australia to an imposing total of 270 for 5, then picked up three wickets in consecutive overs – including the big cheese of Brian Lara – after 13 overs had been lost to a torrential downpour. At once stage West Indies needed just 94 runs from 82 balls with eight wickets in hand, but not even Ramnaresh Sarwan, whose unbeaten 47 lifted his ODI average to 57.73, could rescue the match.

Although West Indies dominated for lengthy periods, they were distinctly frail in the closing overs of each innings. After winning the toss and choosing to field first, they restricted Australia to 183 for 5 in 40 overs, only for Harvey and the ubiquitous Michael Bevan to thump 87 runs from the last 62 balls of the innings. And then, after going to the rain-break excellently placed at 114 for 2, they proceeded to lose six wickets for 61 in ten overs.

Lara's, as ever, was the key wicket. While he was at the crease, Australia had little chance of restricting West Indies in a sprint finish, but moments after he had launched Harvey through midwicket for four, Lara hoicked injudiciously at a cunning leg-roller, and edged a simple catch through to Adam Gilchrist. Devon Smith, on his one-day debut, had added 49 for the third wicket with Lara, but he followed in identical fashion 11 balls later, and when Marlon Samuels holed out to Andrew Symonds at backward point for 2, that was effectively that.

Omari Banks briefly threatened to reprise his heroic role in the fourth Test when he belted Harvey over midwicket for six, but he was run out for 10 by a poor call from Sarwan, and Carlton Baugh and Vasbert Drakes were bowled in consecutive overs. Sarwan did his utmost to keep up with an asking rate of nine an over, but he was always swimming against the tide.

The early part of the innings was much more to West Indies's liking. Chris Gayle and Ricardo Powell opened up with a fusillade of boundaries, adding 75 for the first wicket in 14 overs, with a range of disdainful strokes that ultimately brought about their downfall. Both men fell to Lee in consecutive deliveries – Gayle hoisted a swirling chance to Brad Hogg, who took a fine catch over his shoulder running back from extra cover, and when Lee followed up with an adrenaline-fuelled bouncer, Powell could only splice it straight up in the air, for Gilchrist to take a simple catch (75 for 2).

For all his efforts, Harvey was somehow overlooked as the man of the match. That honour fell to Ricky Ponting, who announced his return to form and fitness with an effortless half-century. Ponting has been suffering from a viral infection and missed Monday's Test defeat in Antigua, but he took no time whatsoever to regain his touch and remind his team who's the boss, now that Steve Waugh has flown home. Merv Dillon made early inroads into Australia's innings with the wickets of Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden, but with a half-fit Lehmann hobbling along in his wake, Ponting wrested control for Australia with a 66-ball 59.

But West Indies were disciplined in the field, and with ten overs remaining they had high hopes of restricting Australia to a sub-250 score. But no total can be discounted when Bevan is at the crease. His unrivalled eye for a gap kept the scoreboard rotating, even though he appears to have given up scoring boundaries – he scored just two today, and 13 in Australia's entire World Cup campaign. Harvey's hyperactive hoisting was the perfect foil to Bevan's sedate approach, and their vital stand ensured that Australia's total would remain out of reach.
