Shane wanted me to keep quiet
Michael Schmidt

From the South African Sunday Times

http://www.sundaytimes.co.za/2003/08/10/news/news02.asp

Quote:
A South African mother-of-three claims disgraced Australian cricketer Shane Warne bombarded her with raunchy phone messages for more than a year after she had a quick fling with him.

Petite brunette Helen Cohen Alon, 45, of Johannesburg, also claims:

She was offered R200 000 to keep quiet about the fling with Warne and the phone calls;

Warne once phoned her up to 40 times after a party, "saying he wanted me"; and

The cricketer sent her several SMSs telling her he was lying next to his wife and "thinking naughty thoughts about me".

Warne - who was relieved of the vice-captaincy of the Australian squad in June 2000 after admitting to making a lewd phone call to a British nurse - could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts. His brother and promoter, Jason Warne - who was informed by telephone and in writing of Cohen Alon's claims - initially told the Sunday Times he knew nothing about her.

Cohen Alon told us she had come forward with her story because of mystery midnight calls which she believed were related to the alleged failure of the gagging deal.

The divorcée told the Sunday Times that she had first met Warne on February 20 last year in a Sandton City clothing store.

"The moment he laid eyes on me, he was interested. He said I had 'a nice-looking ass' and asked me for my number. I gave it to him."

Cohen Alon claimed she went on several dates with the cricketer and twice went to his hotel room, where they had kissed lightly several times. But she said she would not have sex with him because he was married.

She claimed Warne had been so hot for her that he had called her up to 40 times after a model party But another partygoer, who asked not to be named, claimed a skimpily dressed Cohen Alon had spent the evening trying to attract the attention of an uninterested Australian team, including Warne.

Cohen Alon said she had kept several SMSs Warne had sent her. One read: "where are you now... waiting for you should i get dressed or stay naked room 2011... Shane". The Sunday Times has confirmed the number from which the message was sent was Warne's.

Alon Cohen's former hairdresser, Clifford van der Westhuizen, said he had been present when the two had met. "He [Warne] did not look for it. She went to him and started all of this. He never said 'Let's go for supper'; she said, 'I want your number.'"

Van der Westhuizen said Cohen Alon later told him she was "going to leave him [Warne] and will blackmail him for R3-million". She denied this.

She claimed Gavin Varejes, a Johannesburg associate of Warne's, had offered her R200 000 to keep quiet after hearing that she wanted to sell her story in February this year, in the wake of the doping scandal which saw him kicked out of the World Cup.

But, she claimed, Varejes paid her only half the promised amount.

Varejes denied her allegations.

I guess, it's hard for him to stay out of trouble, that is if this is true, which I think it probably isn't. I am still considering what the woman has to gain from this, other then "Fame" or "money"

I think it's all rubbish and getting a little old now I would be really shocked if this was true.

Nicki ... how could you be shocked?

Come on - Warne's got more than enough form on the board. I understand he is easy prey for anyone smart enough to dud him, but you'd have to say Shane ain't real bright, because he specialises in getting himself into such situations where he's ripe for the picking.

He is a wonderful, wonderful cricketer, but I feel really let down at times by his foolishness. To have been playing so well and then get caught for masking agents AND TO LIE ABOUT IT... I know that's a separate issue, but there comes a time where you just can't give a guy the benefit of the doubt any more.

Disappointed again.

Maybe they should trace Warney's phone calls from now on, then he won't have to worry about these "scandals" anymore.

I guess shocked wasn't the right word, what I'm trying to say is I find these latest allegations hard to believe like we all know Warney is silly but is he really that stupid you know? I guess no one would be shocked going by Warne's history.

However, even if it is true, I know being a role model he has to act in a certain way but WHO CARES, who really cares if Shane Warne sent some girl a few text messages? I surely don't and it really annoys me how the media make such an issue out of it. Fair enough if the girl was traumatised from the situation but when she's asking for $400,000 to sell her story I find it hard to believe that Warney sending her some text messages has ruined her life! It's all about money and the media are making her rich fast!

Sporting people like Shane Warne do have a level of responsibility as role models to act in a certain way but I really feel this is taken too far. This issue of him sending another women text messages should be no ones concern except for him and his wife. There's a lot more important issues happening in the world and it appauls me that such a thing makes headline news.

Shane Warne is s legend... the only thing he did that was wrong, was that he played for St.Kilda.... (U19's) but still.... oh and he supports them too! Wink
