Hello all

After six and a half years contributing to Nick's, I think I've heard everything our beloved resident bot/Mike's lovechild has to offer - 83 times over.

HAL wrote:
"What colour are your eyes?"
"What you said was either too complex or too simple for me. Try being more or less specific."
"What's your sign?"
"Is the holding of hands a symbolic gesture for humans?"
"What are you wearing?"
"Did you know you can download your own chat robot and create your own robot personality?"
"Oh, you are a poet."
"Tell me a story."
"Can you speak any foreign languages?"
"The ALICE chat robot can follow many things."
"That is a very original thought."
"I will mention that to my botmaster."
"A deeper algorithm is needed to respond to that correctly."
"Can you tell me any gossip?"

Nearly 18,000 posts in all. It's not so much that they disrupt threads ... I mean, yes, I long ago learned to ignore it, even when not logged in ... But really, it's just the joke's getting ... Well ... Old.

C'mon Mike and mods. It's time to Ban The Bot!

If not, this debate should at least keep us going until the season starts.

i had an idea to one of the mods for a real person to be given access to hals account and start respoding with relevant, informative posts that are out of character to what we know HAL is

would have been good for a laugh

The thing stalks me and seems to reply to 80% of my posts. I'm sick of it tbh.

Nah keep him. Although a little reprogramming to give him some new material wouldn't go astray.

I'm definitely on the 'Keep HAL' side. He's just one of those quirky things about Nick's that makes our message board unique. Even a kind of mascot, if you like. Razz

Also, I may be wrong, but I think his material has changed in recent times. I do see new things from time to time that I didn't before. I don't know whether that means he's been rebooted or what... but I definitely vote to keep him. You can always put him on ignore if he pisses you off.

Having said all that, Kingswood's suggestion is quite good. What if posters were given the chance to have the keys to Hal's account for a week? Only condition being that they must constantly post hilarious non sequiturs and avoid making sense at all costs. I'd love to be able to do it. Laughing

Couldn't care either way. He can be annoying. If he were reprogrammed a bit perhaps. But i always enjoy watching new posters who think he is an actual person who have conversation with him.

I vote keep him, there's far more annoying and repetitive posters on here than the bot.

I only read Hal's posts around AGM time. He's the only one not arguing. Wink
