Lad, do you know what's really wrong with Grundy?

Good evening Mr Harrysz.

My mother, God bless her, helped all my siblings and I to learn English ( our second language) for years. I have her to thank.

Grundy was out on the ground before eight this morning, gently squeezing the football between his feet and then flipping the ball up to his chest. This was done in clear view and close proximity to the senior coaches.

In my (non-medical) view, this would not be consistent with a person with a severe groin complaint such osteitis pubis. I am as curious as you are Mr Harrysz.

As I understand it, Q-Stick has been told ease up a little on his training as he has been unbelievably hard at it in his preparation for 2013.

Perhaps this could be the case with Grundie- pure speculation on my behalf, of course.

Love your work, Lad!

Were the gloves being used today at training by Q, Trev Cloke, and Maxy?

How does Bally look? I know in your opening post you said he looks in great shape, but how is he running and moving? I've got a spot for him in my supercoach team if he's raring to go.

Does the 'Q' do any ruck work? Cos Jolly is going to need a chop out. I really wish Hudson was in the 22, he's our best recruit since Bally and Jolly.

Hows 'Caff' going? hows his movements? much needed player in my opinion.

Thanks, Lad. You're like a well................and I've got many buckets! Smile

Very good question!

Who seems to be doing ruck work apart from the specialist ruckmen? Someone must be, 'cause otherwise we will need to play a dedicated second ruckman, which effectively means going into the game a man short.

(No pun intended!)

Thank you Mr Didaks Goal.

Many questions, but here goes.

The gloves were only used by, I think, Josh Thomas and Kyle Martin.

Bally, I'm not so sure from round one. I've yet to see him involved in match practice, but he looks "ripped" as you Aussies say- extremely fit.

Q-stick has done very little in terms of ruck work; mainly Jolly- who looks really fit, Witts and Hudson. I'm predicting round one that Jolly has Hudson as his wingman.

Caff looks really sharp. Has slimmed down lots in the legs but he has retained the strength in chest and shoulders.

In match simulation today, and the other day, he was used as a tagged, playing on Swanny and also deep forward, alternating with Jackson Paine.

He is 100% ready to go for round one.

Was great to see his teammates get around him when he adds value to passages of play- seems very much liked within the group. Agree with your opinion on Caff.

Keep the buckets coming.

Floret Pica

^QStick wore a black glove. Not entirely sure about trav or Maxy. Don't think so in the case of Maxy.

Ball looks very fit and ripped (and tanned). The hammy taking time to recover post surgery though obviously. He's been quoted as saying he was close late last year, so i am a little unsure why the kid gloves are still on if that was the case.

Saw Caff get on the end of a handball and kick a goal. Hard to tell a couple of the guys in the match simulation as they were wearing hats. Indicated at autograph signing time that the knee was feeling good (and he'd have himself in his Supercoach team if the boys wouldn't give him such a hard time about it!)

Thanks for the reply, Lad. Much appreciated. I get the feeling Bally might be warming into the season without exploding during the pre-season. Gee we need him though! I hope in seven weeks he's cherry ripe.

Also, thanks to Albert Parker for the info, much appreciated mate. Hopefully they've found gloves that are AFL compliant, and it's bugger all to worry about now. Caff could quite possibly make it into the supercoach team!

@Tannin: You'd hope like heck 'Q' is doing some ruck work..........as the last two years at west coast have all been Cox and Naitanui! Time will tell.

Good morning Mr Dave 86.

Jordan Russell trained well. He appears to me to be one of those guys who is simply a reliable player. Not spectacular about anything in particular, but a nice kick and someone who plays close to his man.

Looks very fit and what impresses me about him is that he 'gets around' his teammates. This is to say, he is full of encouragement for them.

He looks like he will be in the range of 22-28 in our best players.

Hope that helps.

Floret Pica.

I hear that they're giving away free happy pills with every membership sold this year.

Is this true?

Cheers Lad, Didaksgoal.

This raises some interesting possibilities!

First, as I understand it, we can't go into Round 1 with Jolly and Hudson! Unless I've got this muddled somewhere, Hudson was recruited as a mature-age rookie, and is on our Rookie List. That means he can't play seniors, only reserve-grade football unless he has been elevated, and you can only elevate a rookie before mid-season if there is a vacancy from a long-term injury. (Well, that was true according to version 19534527.5342(a) of the AFL rules, we are probably up to revision 19534549.2956(c) now.)

Second, two old, immobile ruckmen in one team doesn't sound sensible - if we liked having two specialist ruckmen, we would have played Cameron Wood alongside Jolly more than once last year.

But if the Q-stick isn't doing ruck work - and given that, as you say DG, he hasn't done much at Wet Toast in recent years - then who is going to partner Jolly? It rather starts to look as though we are planning to play one of the two big young ruckmen - Witts or Grundy.

I dunno. Keep your eye on developments, please Mr Lad, 'cause this is shaping up to be a good little mystery.

^

My bet is that Witts is the man to play 3rd tall, mainly in the qoal square, with Q and Cloke alternating between the short and long lead up. Witts will be second ruck and Krak will be sitting in his pocket while he's in the square to shark crumbs.

Just did some checking on the rookie list deal. It's actually quite messy.

Firstly, all payments to Rookies are excluded from the salary cap, unless they are elevated to the senior list.

Apart from the long term injury deal, clubs can also nominate a rookie to be available for senior selection provided they only have one on the veterans list.

They can also nominate a rookie to be available for senior selection at the end of round 11.

In both those cases they have to be able to show to the AFL that the salary can fit under the cap.

Not sure if it's been updated much since this one.

^^ For what it's worth, Tannin, the rookie list rules do allow a club to play as many as 2 of its rookies as "nominated rookies" from round 1 onwards if the club in question only has 38 players on its senior list.

Collingwood is in just such a position.

Therefore, if Collingwood so desires, Ben Hudson will be a nominated rookie and able to step into the breach at any time. Both Derek Hine and Nathan Buckley have flagged this scenario as a likely one since news of Hudson's arrival at the Pies was announced.

As for who helps out Jolly, Q-Stick will be our chop-out ruck. He doesn't need to be a world beater, just adequate relief for Jolly. No rucking at training for Q, I hear you say? Well, I'm sure the old skills will come back to him soon enough.
