Post subject: Gubby Allan immortalised at Vic Park......Why? | |
|
Speaking of meaningless topics, I would like to raise one that I read earlier this year, either here or at Hotrod's site.
How the **** did Gubby Allan get his name up among the greats on the Sherrin Stand. No other administrators have their names up and surely it wasn't for his footballing prowess.....20 odd games without a highlight apart from a pinpoint pass to Simon Beasley.

The story you refer to appeared on page 3 of the Vic Park Tribute edition of Hot Pies.
No answers to this puzzle have been forthcoming. I had entertained the notion of climbing up on the Rush Stand roof at the last game & spray painting a true Maggie legend up there - Fatui Attata. But I never quite got drunk enough.
You'll also find that Wes Fellows gets a mention with his old man on the Ryder Stand. That also is stretching the friendship. |

I guess Wes did win a Copeland, which as we all know, is more cherished than a Brownlow, so it would always have been a tough call to leave him off.
Having said that though, I would rather have seen 'Nifty' Neville Shaw get his name up there with Ray and Tony. He only played 50 odd games but I liked his spirit.

PS: Hotty
I also attempted to get drunk that day, but the Light Ice in Plastic Bottles just couldn't do the job for me. I woulda got up there and spray painted Wally Amadio's name.

I was a bit hesitant to mention the $3.80 plastic Light Ice stubbies. I've been whining about it for weeks & I'm getting worried it has become a habit & people are starting to call me a sook as well as a git behind my back.
The solution to the problem was a pass out & quick trip to the Yarra Hotel at half time. The blue coats didn't even ask for the pass out back let alone what the six buldges under my jacket were.
I must admit I'd forgotten about Wes' Copeland. Couple that with the family lineage & I'm willing to accept I'm out of order. It's just that I wished at least one of those half arsed shirtfronts or shepherds connected. |

I think that the reason Gubby's name is up there is because in the midst of the hysteria in the wake of the '90 flag he slipped his name amongst the list of names to go up.
No other reason makes any sense. |

I have never saw him play, but apparently Errol Hutchesson is very lucky to have his name up there. |
