I was told that sharks left the water when lawyers entered out of professional courtesy

This is the version of that joke that I had in mind. It's the one generally favoured among partners of Australia's larger firms:

Did you hear about the lawyer on vacation whose sailboat capsized in dangerous, shark-infested waters?

He surprised his traveling companions by volunteering to swim to the far-off shore for help. As he swam, his companions were startled by the appearance of two dorsal fins -- great white sharks, heading straight toward the lawyer.

To their surprise, the sharks allowed the lawyer to take hold of their fins, and escorted him safely to shore.

When the lawyer returned with help, his companions asked him how he had managed such an incredible feat. The lawyer answered, "Professional courtesy."

There's a slightly better version, in which an entire school of sharks lines up between the boat and the shore so that the lawyer can walk to safety without getting her silk suit wet but I can't find that one on the internet.

I'm calling BS.

A real lawyer would have explained to them on returning that he had negotiated with the sharks that they could eat his contemporaries in return for safe passage and then pushed them in.

Trust lawyers to turn what was a simple joke into something long and complicated!

Apparently the beaches around Egypt take a dim view of people nuding up.

Pretty sickening story, but not actually off-topic: the newspaper evidently thinks it's acceptable to show footage of someone getting shot dead, but they blur his genitals you know, just in case anyone gets offended. That's our society in a nutshell.

That's really disgusting. Why would they shoot an obviously unarmed man?

That footage, even with a warning is distressing enough without balls though. I was going to say it should not be in the net, but there is a clrear warning about the content, and quite frankly the world needs to see what's going on.

Yep, but if I'd posted the same link from the Herald Sun would it have been typical Murdoch garbage?

Quite possibly. But frankly I have little more time for Fairfax these days.

I guess the same reason East German guards shot people at the Berlin Wall. Sometimes border fences are just a way to demarcate territory, and sometimes they're a way of keeping the prisoners in.

Back on topic, should clothing be optional at the beach?

It's been my experience that clothing optional beaches are full of ugly naked people (except when I'm there).

When you consider what is considered "decent", swimming naked really isn't all that offensive.

Dear oh lord, that pic is the definition of too much of a good thing.

Um... scarier that you're imagining me naked every time you visit this thread? Shocked Wink

(P.S. I have no doubt that there are plenty of people out there who wouldn't particularly want to see me naked; but my girlfriend does, and that's really all that matters. Smile)
