You think devout Muslims are impressed by tiny bikinis and speedos? I don't know how they cope with it—mutter to themselves about the end of civilisation, politely look the other way or accept it as part of the bargain of living in modern Western society—but, somehow, they do. Perhaps we could learn something from them.

So why the ban? Why does anyone need to cover up?

Actually you'll probably find the woman think, **** how good not to be sweating under all these clothes in 35 degree heat, and the men are ogling thinking whoa, look at that chick, and then they go home and mutter about the end of civilisation.

I think the men would actually have issues controlling certain parts of their body which could cause them embarrassment.

In this case, the event in question is a private swimming night for Muslim women. They've booked out the pool for those two hours on one night of the year, and opted for their own dress code. That's all. Every other day of the year, if they go to the pool or the beach, they wear their own swimmers and put up with whatever anyone else is wearing.

I guess the rule is, does this phenomenon hurt anyone else? Public nudity on the beach doesn't; capital punishment most certainly does.

I'm not sure if the propaganda is true or not about people of the Islam faith seeing another person not their partner Nude, but if it is then seeing a stranger naked would hurt them spiritually.

Not it was not - it was a public event

“The applicant intends this to be an event where people of all races and religions and ages may attend, use the Centre’s facilities and socialise together,” VCAT notes.

Quite separate from the private swimming nights!

And it's complete bollocks and should be strongly resisted!!!

It's two hours on one evening at one swimming pool on one night of the year. I think we'll survive. Rolling Eyes

Are you being deliberately dense Rolling Eyes

The 2 hours on one evening set aside for any group including Muslim women is not an issue - the applying of such a "cover up" ban for PUBLIC events is a problem and I repeat should be strongly resisted!

I presume it was only made a public event because they wanted to encourage as many women to come as possible—not make it seem like a club with a secret password. It was like a private event for Muslim women, but more inclusive. Anyhow, many public events at public places have dress codes. What's the problem? It's a total storm in a teacup.

(I do find it ironic that people are getting outraged about this in this thread, of all places. "This is Australia, we should be allowed to wear as little as we like!" Except at nearly every public beach in the country.)

I've seen a lot of women with headscarves. Of course, there are degrees of devoutness, and it's possible that the strictest stay at home. But that's their right; obviously, apart from the odd designated swimming pool night or the establishment of a specialist pool, I don't support restricting the rights of the majority for the sake of a minority's religious beliefs. It'd be like not playing football on Good Friday or something.

Morrigu, I obviously accept that dress codes exist (although I have questioned their existence in other threads). But surely you can see that we're talking about a private/council venue as opposed to a public outdoor setting. Note that I'm not necessarily advocating nudity in swimming pools—you could make the case for or against, but it's a somewhat different context.

My parents were in Dubai and mum found a really lovely lady in the hotel who wore a full burka and asked my mum if she had any questions.

The biggest thing mum took out of it was the fact the burka was infact a versace and under it the woman was in designer clothes. She said they spend a lot of time with their female friends and don't wear them when they're alone or with other women.

She said they do like to feel sexy and wear nice things.

The woman said it wasn't an issue for them as they really don't wear them all that often.
