Talked a little about John Wren in a post about Eddie
before it was locked by over zealous Mods.
But I was thinking about the connection between this bigger
than life character and the Collingwood Football Club.
I only know a little about Wren and Collingwood.
I heard Lou Richards talk about how Wren use to go into the rooms
after games and give money to players who did well.
We have a John Wren Nickster but I don't know much about the connection
with our Club.
Is there anybody out there that has any interesting info re Wren and the
Club? _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

I volunteer to be the new John Wren. I will go into the rooms after games and accept packets of money from the players who did badly. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Or, translated into

I don't

John Wren was my grandfather's landlord in 1914. He owned some terraces in Turner Street including Claremont Cottage, one house down from the corner of Rich Street. My grandfather's house was across the road from the Yarra Falls forward pocket at Vic Park.
When my grandfather lost his job in 1914 he couldn't pay Mr.Wren his rent. He wrote to Mr.Wren to ask for more time to pay. He got a letter back from him telling him to forget about the month of missed rent and it even included some money from Mr.Wren. My auntie still has that letter.
My grandfather became a mad Collingwood supporter and a member after the war till 1977. He eventually signed up with the AIF in late 1914 and fought in Turkey and France. He always insisted Dick Lee was the best player he ever saw. _________________ Magpies love pies(Lol) |
