Having gone to 5-6 reserves games this year and observed Tapping's match reports and player summaries, I can't help but feel a tad disappointed about Goodyear's lack of progress this year. He seemed to be a prolific ball winner at TAC level yet struggles to exceed above 10 possessions per week in the reserves.

Obviously the transition to "bigger bodies" can be a period of greater adjustment for some, but you get the feeling that Tapping is really struggling for positives with Goodyear when describing each match in recent times.

Admittedly he seems to be moved around filling in different spots and may need to settle down into a fixed position sometime soon. I guess I expected a "little extra" this year. Manteit seems to have surpassed him albeit he was rookie listed. On a positive note, I guess there is time however would hate to see another "Daniel Farmer" who was recruited approximately at the same spot in the draft a few years back!

From what I've observed he's been given some very specific match day roles where his possession count becomes a secondary factor. I think he's shown improvement ever game I've seen him play and happy for him to be given more time.

So is Goodyear playing the Hard-Tag so he does not have to get many Touches?

As he gets next to none

They've stuck him in the centre clearances at times, on a wing, on a back flank and a forward flank. He was getting up to 18 disposals at times but been quieter the last few weeks. Hard to know how much he can develop.

He's a late draft pick so no big deal if he doesn't end up making the grade.

That outcome was always going to be the more likely if it occurs.

He's got one more year so reassess then.

He'll make the grade if he's allowed to play his natural role.

They obviously wanted him to work on his defensive game.

Will end up our next Swan type.

As others have alluded to, he's played a variety of roles at either ends. Back pocket, half forward, centre square/on-ball, a bit of wing, but mostly with a defensive assignment. Which is fine, everyone needs to start and learn somewhere, but he's generally a low possession, limited effectiveness/impact player in those roles, although when playing forward he has had a habit of sneaking in for a goal here and there.

If/when he gets released to play as a proper midfielder next year, he'll start to show much more with his wheels and ability to win contested ball...
