Good Friday is one of 2 1/2 restricted trading days in Victoria under the public holidays legislation. The others are Christmas day and from 12:01 am to 1pm on ANZAC day.
The other 3 Easter public holidays and all the other holidays are non restricted.
Pretty much everyone celebrates Christmas whether they're religious or not but only a very small minority actually celebrate Good Friday, it has no meaning. FFS Easter Sunday is easter egg day but Good Friday is just a day when you get thrown back to the 50's for no valid reason to the vast majority. Scrap the restrictions. |
So let me get this straight Stui; Easter Sunday is chocolate eating day, Christmas is get presents day, which must make Anzac Day get drunk and eat lamb day. (The war was a long time ago too, surely we can get rid of all the rubbish marches and remember the fallen crap....it's like 1940's stuff)
Where as we get nothing nice to treat ourselves with on good Friday so why should we miss out on footy too.....am I starting to get the picture?
All tongue in cheek btw brother .

Don't know about you, but I reckon Good Friday would still be boring if they schedule the match as the perpetual North Melbourne -v- Carlton game that is being called for.
I'd rather no footy than watch those two. _________________ How would Siri know when to answer "Hey Siri" unless it is listening in to everything you say? |

LOL, pretty close. ANZAC day is go to a service, remember the fallen then watch the footy and get pissed day.
ANZAC day means more to me than the religion behind the other two. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Get with it people. It is a day when Channel 7 in Victoria get to trot out the stable of minor celebrities and reality show whores so they pretend to care about the RCH. Throw that in with free plugs for chocolate companies that have gouged the public for hollow chocolate compound products and there you have it. _________________ Annoying opposition supporters since 1967. |

Yep
Remember what you tell your kids when they whinge they are bored
"Get outside and make your own fun!"
Catch up on the shit you recorded for one day.
Have a BBQ and invite your friends (Sunday your stuck with family, make Friday funday!)
Gees I remember when the shops shut at noon on a Saturday til 9am Monday. And footy was all on Saturdays. Worse thing that ever happened was 7 day a week 24 hr trading and pokies! When did you all start needing to be spoon fed the fun in your lives? _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Not playing on Good Friday is a recognition of a Pagan event, not Christian. Easter is actually an observance of the Pagan goddess Eostre, and identifies a period that is so many full moons after the Solstice in December (celebrated by the Christians as Christmas).
I think that the AFL is afraid that a Good Friday game would see a half-time show that involved brutal sacrifices of Bulls, lambs, virgins etc. Mind you, it would probably be hard to find a virgin in Sydney at Easter. _________________ Magpies forever.

This but then those who whinge would watch a match between GWS Reserves v Carlton Reserves because its footy...
There is NRL on the day and I like League but I have no desire to watch it because I couldn't give 2 shits about the teams. If AFL played on Good Friday and it wasn't Collingwood, I wouldn't be watching.
But everyone gets bored with no footy on 1 day of the year...Personally I've never had that problem on Good Friday, always out and about for the day with plenty to do. Some people just need to get out and find something to do because there is plenty.
Or better yet, go away for the long weekend and enjoy some peace and quiet. Weather is still great so you could enjoy a great long weekend and forget about Footy, its a bloody long season and people want it to start earlier? |

It is not a matter of whether we can do without football for a day.
Hey, I reckon even DTM could handle that.
It is that a perfectly great day is going to waste.
It is not a day that is important in any shape or form, except
for a very few religious folks.
It is a day when very few people are working and it is not a big family day.
Anybody can go without footy or food or grog or whatever for a day.
The question is why should they! _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

Other than the name of who is making the comments, has any other part of the article changed over the last 10 years?
Every year people whinge, every year the AFL says they will look into it, then people forget until October and fixture time and this year is the year, then the fixture comes out, no Good Friday game. Rinse and repeat... |

Agree with all of it wholeheartedly (except maybe the bbq bit).
"Other sports do it" is not a reason for the AFL to do it. I like that so far, the AFL have had the moral backbone to not do it. And to those who say it could be used to raise money for charity, use the money from Thursday or Saturday for charity.
One day off from footy isn't a life sentence.
I'm firmly in the NO GOOD FRIDAY footy camp. _________________ kymbo |

With a variation of that famous little Johnny quote.
I will choose the days when I slow down and the manner in which I do it!!!
As I said before, I don't want some moral rabbit determining the day I can watch footy.
Leave it to the free market and not the friggin easter bunny to schedule the footy.
The market will vote with its feet and embrace good friday football.
This reminds me when Sunday football was first proposed.
The same arguments were being used. _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

My 2 shekels worth:
Keep it as it is.
I have posted before that Australia is basically a Christian country. To that extent we should be respectful of that time of year.
For me however the bigger picture concerns rhythm - no not the Catholic method nor the Billings method but the rhythm of life (apologies to Sammy Davis Junior).
We live in a society where we ought not be exclusively beholden to economic dictates or fashions.
I believe in rituals & Easter Friday is part of that. I also believe we need to have our weekends back & not be sold to the devil like it is now.
People need more time with family/friends/self & more rest periods where commercialism, economic activity & corporatism does not have to intrude 365 or 366 days per year.
We are losing our weekends as it is & in my view we need to restore them. We can live without footy for Good friday & for me this is a good thing. May it continue.
Bless you children, go forth & multiply if not have sex & travel. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |
