One interesting thing looking at Rocca's statistics in 1995 is that, despite his 93 goals, Collingwood only won 8 games. Remarkably, he had 10 games in that season in which he kicked at least 5 goals but, of those 10, Collingwood won only 3.
It shows how much the defensive side of the game has tightened up in the last two decades - now, it is more or less unthinkable that any team could recruit a FF they might reasonably expect to get at least 5 goals from every second game. I hope this changes with the cycle of playing-styles, since the two most exciting things about football were always the great marks and the anticipation of - and witnessing - a contest between two tremendous attacking teams, wondering which FF would win the day - and the most exciting thing of all was the rare, unstoppable star forward who could do both.
And to think that, as kids, we took McKenna, Hudson, Jezza and Hart for granted and, at Collingwood, just expected that there would be, serially, a McKenna, a Carman, a (Craig) Davis, a Daicos, a Sav, an Ant etc. The game constantly evolves - but some changes are most decidedly not for the better. |

Rex asks Sav about the move away from Victoria Park to the MCG.
Says he wanted to stay at Victoria Park. Having the crowd on your side would have been a bigger advantages. Would rather they upgraded the ground/stands. _________________ Sydney Collingwood Supporters Club

Any mention of the arm-chair ride he got from Brereton, in taking the 2nd defender up, out of the contest with his body, back in 1995? _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Playing routinely on the ground where almost all the important finals are played has definite advantages. Ian Robertson was speaking on SEN last week about Ronald Dale and, in that context, pointed out that the incoming coach's experience at Melbourne in its glory years gave him a vision of how Carlton's team needed to be redesigned to play finals, rather than to win at Princes Park. As a lad, I often felt that the 'pies, as a consequence of playing home games at Victoria Park, frequently fielded comparitively slower teams that could cover the smaller suburban grounds during the home and away season but lacked line-breakers for the MCG. |

Well, Jessie kind of takes himself out of the contest, and thus the team... _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |
