https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jan/13/trump-impeached-again-president-history-capitol-attack

Quote:
The House of Representatives on Wednesday impeached Donald Trump for inciting a violent insurrection against the government of the United States a week after he encouraged a mob of his supporters to storm the US Capitol, a historic condemnation that makes him the only American president to be charged twice with committing high crimes and misdemeanors.

After an emotional day-long debate in the chamber where lawmakers cowered last week as rioters vandalized the Capitol, nearly a dozen House Republicans joined Democrats to embrace the constitution’s gravest remedy after vowing to hold Trump to account before he leaves office next week.

The sole article of impeachment charges the defeated president with “inciting an insurrection” that led to what the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, said would be immortalized as a “day of fire” on Capitol Hill.

The president, Pelosi said, represented a “clear and present danger to the nation we all love”.

The final count was 232 to 197, with 10 members of the president’s party supporting his unprecedented second impeachment, making it the most bipartisan impeachment vote in US history. Among them was Liz Cheney, the No 3 House Republican and daughter of Dick Cheney, George W Bush’s vice-president. Though she did not rise to speak on Wednesday, she issued a blistering statement announcing her decision, in which she said that there had “never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States” than Trump’s conduct on 6 January.

“The president of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” said Cheney in a statement.

The tawdry and mentally unstable just love the bloke, don't they?

As Burden stood at the pulpit Sunday, he shouted in tongues while a woman at the altar waved a large American flag in front of him. The pastor cited “prophetic voices” who have said God told them Trump would be president for eight years.

“We have an executive order — not from Congress or D.C., but from the desk of the CEO of heaven, the boss of the planet,” Burden said. “He said from his desk in heaven, this is my will; Trump will be in for eight years.”

This is a failed weirdo sub-culture divorced from modernity. It's not a heartland; rather, it's an outskirts of lunatic cults and quackery that make a mockery of the original intention of the electoral college, and are an embarrassment to Western civilisation.

Oddball groups are curious and even entertaining in small doses, but you can't have them setting policy and destabilising the global economy and international relations through the superpower.

If "the most bipartisan presidential impeachment in history" can still only manage 10 votes from the president's party (vs 197 against), following a catastrophic mixture of self-serving rabble-rousing, misconduct and incompetence that will surely never be repeated, I think we can safely say that impeachment is an entirely pointless exercise and no president will ever actually get removed from office under the current rules. Which makes me suspect, again, that the biggest problem here is the position itself.

I don't think a poster who broke "news" on Nick's such as:

• Brodie Grundy leaving the club
• Josh Jenkins being signed by Collingwood
• The 2020 AFL season being cancelled

is really much of an authority on the topic of what is or isn't fake. Laughing

Good article, makes you wonder about the future. I dare say none of the factors that led to Trump being elected POTUS have gone away and I'll be very surprised if potential future candidates don't go to school on what he did that worked best.

Quote:
CNN called this a "solemn" moment. The impeachment — again — of Donald Trump is about the soul of America.

It is more accurate to say it is a reflection of the damaged soul of America.

While news networks and political pundits cast this historic moment as renewing and upholding democracy, the truth is American democracy looks like a sham — a rigged game played by Washington elites.

America is a tribalised society, fractured along class, race and culture. One thing they do agree on is that politics is the problem.

There are some who would say this second impeachment is proof the system works. It is instead a system trying to catch up.

The system that delivered us Trump is now trying to rid itself of him.

But the impeachment of Trump only reveals how deep this cancer is.

This cracked me up:

Quote:
According to the Washington Post, relations between Trump and Giuliani have dramatically cooled. Trump has instructed his aides not to pay Giuliani’s outstanding fees. The president is reportedly offended by Giuliani’s demand for $20,000 a day – a figure the lawyer denies, but which is apparently in writing. White House officials have even been told not to put through any of Giuliani’s calls.

I said all along he won because the people are sick to death of corrupt or self serving politicians, but now the crazies are taking over. I thought it would be a lesson to future politicians, hopefullyit doesn’t just go back to business as usual. Certainly needed a shakeup, as does ours, not sure it needs a full scale war. Last stand at the Alamo?

This would be why they elected the most corrupt and self-serving president in the entire history of the United States.

Touché 🤪

I never knew that to clean up the swamp, Trump had to dive in and stir it all up again! This putrid smell will last for many years. So he made the sewer stink more and then wanted another term to fix it up, denying the fact that he was the perpetrator😃 Unreal but geez I will miss all the popcorn and the entertainment of the past few years😅 That was the height of great comedy.

Trump's constant fanning of outrage and hatred among his supporters, and his deliberate blindness to white terror has led to this: right now, today, it is judged necessary to station 20,000 troops - yes, that is twenty thousand soldiers in Washington just to keep the peace.

There are more American soldiers in Washington than there are in Iraq and Afghanistan both put together.
