1. He averaged 20. He batted twice for 40 runs.

2. He came in in each innings when Australia had over 350 runs on the board (2/351 and 2/369).

3. Australia made 580 and 3/569 in its only two innings in that series, so - as to the competency of Pakistan's bowling, I rest my case.

4. It is just a little self-serving to look at Smith's cameos against Pakistan. He had just come off a double-century, two centuries etc against England, in England. At least one competent writer took the view that it was the greatest series performance of all time, adjusted for the opposition, pitch conditions etc: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/why-steven-smith-s-2019-ashes-batting-performance-is-the-greatest-of-all-time-in-a-series-1234824

Thus:

Quote:
Steven Smith's epochal feats in the 2019 Ashes series add up to the best ever series batting performance in the history of the game. He gathered 3427 rating points, which works out to over 800 points per Test (he missed one match with a concussion). He failed in one innings out of seven. The runs were scored when needed, and they helped Australia draw the series. In two Tests he delivered big performances in each innings, and he made excellent big fifties in the other two.

You have a very selective memory.

I heard Sunny Gavaskar describe Bradsmith as the “best batsman” in the contemporary game” this morning. The Little Master probably mis-spoke?

Test All-Rounders.

1 Ben Stokes 428
2 Jason Holder 414
3 Ravindra Jadeja 410
4 Shakib Al Hasan 359
5 Kyle Jamieson 293
6 Ravi Ashwin 282
7 Mitchell Starc 275
8 Colin de G'homme 258
9 Chris Woakes 253
10 Pat Cummins 249

Will be interesting to see Ashwin's rating, after his century and 5fa, against the Poms. He has 1 wicket in England's second innings, with 7 more possibilities.

From the Ratings FAQs.

How do you rate all-rounders?

We have devised an all-rounder index that gives a good indication of who the best all-rounders in the world are in Test and One Day cricket. To obtain the index, simply take the player's batting and bowling points, multiply them together and divide by 1000. So a player with 800 batting and 0 bowling gets an index of zero (because he can't bowl and therefore isn't an all-rounder!), 600 batting/200 bowling gets a rating of 120, and 400 batting/400 bowling points gets a rating of 160. An index of 300 plus is world class. Incidentally, this index does omit one important all-rounder skill, namely fielding. There is no satisfactory way of rating fielding skills statistically at present.

Must have gotten things mixed up. My bad.

But 20 is not good either!

Lazza, Kane Williamson has clearly been the best Test batsman in the world for a number of years now.

Are you completely ignoring this, K ?

He did rate 915 after his 200 n.o. against Bangladesh, 2 years ago.

Subsequent innings of 0, 4, 20, 51, 4, 34, 14, 9, 0, 3 & 5 brought him back to the mere mortals.

Well, there just hasn't been much competition over the whole period of the last few years. Maybe I'm under-selling Virat. I should examine his credentials more. Partly (if I am under-selling him), that may be due to Indians not indulging in crazy Myths of Virat. They can and do pick fault with him. Root has roared back to start this year, but the couple of years before that weren't great.

Note that I have a much easier task defending my position, since I'm not claiming much. I don't know how Kane & Virat rank in historical terms. I don't make wild claims that are an insult to the past.

There are a lot of elephants in the room re. Smith. e.g. since his first full series back in the team, Marnus has been by far the best batsman in the Oz team. No one in the Oz media wants to mention this obvious fact. Do they all want to protect the myth?!

But is Marnus really a great batsman? If you look at his Sheffield Shield career with no name attached, you'd think it was the career of quite a mediocre batsman.

Since Nov 2019,

Marnus: 1322 runs at ave. 82.62 and SR 57.3.

Smith: 567 runs at ave. 40.5 and SR 43.18.

Marnus has been more than twice as good as Smith... And these have been flat decks (which is why Marnus is averaging over 80). The worry for Smith is that he hasn't even been reliable in Flat-Track Bullying in recent times, while he's been the usual reliable failure in bowlers' conditions (see e.g. the Sheffield Shield match that just ended).

I suggest you look at the pre-Test careers of McGrath, Warne and S Waugh.

Close to all 3 being included in an Aussie best ever Test team.

Some players find their true level, in Tests - as Smith has done.
