'Arrogance': Blind Citizens Australia calls on AFL to fix jumper-clashes amid Pies-Geelong debacle

Quote:
Friday night's qualifying final between Geelong and Collingwood was an aesthetic catastrophe, with many fans, commentators and even current AFL players struggling to tell the two teams apart.

I don't remember how many times (but it was many) when players from either side kicked straight to the opposition. When packs formed it was awful. Geelong v. Collingwood is the worst jumper clash because in packs many times horizontal is vertical, and Geelong have a dark navy blue stripe, unlike North Melbourne who have a lighter royal blue.

It is time for the AFL to act, and perhaps Collingwood should be more creative and come up with a great away strip for themselves. Teams in all other sports do it all the time. In fact as a Manchester United supporter I can tell you they change their strip every year (a marketing device), but it works.

I was sitting second row from the back in the nosebleeds on level 4 and am starting to think I need glasses (jumper numbers were too blurry to make out), but even I reckon this is a massive beat-up. Was it very occasionally confusing which team was which? Yeah, maybe. Was it a huge problem that impacted my ability to follow the game? No, not at all.

The clash jumper push is and always has been a disingenuous money-making exercise for the AFL. Most clubs' jumpers are perfectly able to be told apart, and for those that are somewhat similar (like Collingwood and Geelong), that's what different-coloured shorts are for. But feel free to keep pushing this one, and watch us ultimately be forced to wear some non-traditional outfit just like all the other teams.

And no offence to vision-impaired people, but I thought that headline was from a satirical website when I saw it. One should of course take accessibility concerns seriously, but for the (perhaps few) remaining among us who still think tradition in football is important, the old Aesop's fable about the man, his son and the donkey comes to mind – there's just no possible way to make everybody happy.

No need for a jumper change. All that should have happened is changing the colour of the shorts.

Collingwood (black shorts)
Geelong (white shorts)

Couple of things -

It has been this way always. I recall the days of muddy suburban grounds where it was almost impossible to distinguish teams.

In 2019 we do need (as we should have always) consider those with diminished sight

As I age it gets harder to see whats going on when the game is "down the other end" from where I sit at the ground.

In fact , for a number of reasons, I rarely attend now. Prefer to watch on Tv
.
Can we fix this without everyone getting antsy about their jumper and associated "right"

I was there. No problems at all distinguishing between the two teams at all. In fact, didn’t hear anyone complaining about it...?

I was about 28 rows back in M6, my eyes are fk’ed at the best of times, I did have a bit of an issue when there was a pack.
Other than that, not really.
I did hear people around me saying can’t distinguish the jumpers.

People just want something to complain about. I remember watching North v Collingwood on a Black & White TV and still had no problem telling who was who. Clash jumpers are nothing more than continual merchandise revenue.

It’s easy to tell the Collingwood jumpers - they’re the ones on the good footballers.

It would have been a whole lot worse if we had our white clash strip on. Can’t understand why the AFL can’t step in and say Cats wear white shorts and Pies black. Who gives a flying f... who finished higher if you are good enough on the day you win through. Some of the big wigs at clubs have big egos.

If the clubs thought it was a problem they could have talked before the match and agreed on which team would wear which shorts

Has not been a problem for 100 years of footy and the 40 years of B & W TV
Just a marketing exercise

I watched the 77 gf between Norf and Collingwood on a black and white TV with poor reception and I could tell the teams apart then.

We have a handshake agreement with Geelong that they would always wear white shorts when playing us (just as we do with North) to reduce the clash.

I think they purposely didn't honour the agreement to either protest the home ground thing, stick it up Collingwood, or both.

But clubs already have different home and away jumpers, so out of the four combinations there must be one that clashes less.

Geelong could always have worn yellow stripes. That would have been apt.

After we win the flag this year

We should wear a “Gold Jacket” jumper in all our away games from next season and then on as it can be our clash strip

That will give all the clubs another thing to complain about us.
