White House effort to undermine Fauci is criticized by public health experts, scientists and Democrats

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/07/13/white-house-effort-undermine-fauci-is-criticized-by-public-health-experts-scientists-democrats/

"The White House provided The Post with examples of what it characterized as mistakes that Fauci, the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, had made about the pandemic, mostly in the early days when information about the virus was extremely limited. The White House also made the information available to other reporters, some of whom described it as “opposition research.”

Academics and researchers rallied to defend Fauci. “It’s shocking,” said Janis Orlowski, chief health care officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges. “When you begin to discredit scientists like Fauci, who are national treasures, you are in serious trouble.”
...

Republicans were mostly silent. Charlie Dent, a former GOP congressman from Pennsylvania, was an exception. Fauci, he tweeted, “has not been well-schooled in bootlicking and sycophancy.”
...

In a tweet Sunday, Carlos del Rio, an infectious-disease specialist at Emory University School of Medicine, accused the White House of not only sidelining Fauci but also of smearing him. “I’m deeply disturbed,” he said."

"National treasure" is probably way over the top, but obviously the US government is trying to shoot the messenger.

If Americans want to nominate a "national treasure" re. the pandemic, a better candidate might be Bill Gates.

You and your family get locked in an unventilated room with tins of baked beans and sauerkraut and sticks of kabana as the only food. You have tap water and a toilet. You stay there until you all agree to wear face masks for 12 months, or die.

The reason the toilet paper gets snapped up in the panic buying is because people are shitting themselves about the virus and then the second wave of panic buyers are people who are shitting themselves about running out of toilet paper. It's a vicious circle.

Yep! There was talk of a checkpoint at Avenel but it wasn't operational today, could see where it was with the electronic message boards leading up to a truck stop but all were turned off. It reminds me of usually travelling the Hume on a Tuesday after a long weekend. They blitz the long weekend then have Tuesday-Wednesday off

Only to Wodonga so far, will cross the border tomorrow and try out my permit, decided peak hour wasn't the time to try!

My area Hume is still the worst. I really should put a banner across the Paco road overpass encouraging my neighbours not to give up. I see Brimbank has had just as many new cases today as Hume.

Ah, yeah, I did several runs up to NSW over the past 4 months including while supposedly in stage 3 lockdown and people being fined for farting in public and never saw a cop,

There's 2 bridges at Toc, a road bridge and a rail one. I'm thinking it might not be smart to try to sneak past the Army so I'm staying home for now. Mad
