Taylor Adams

Wins his second Gavin Brown Medal after also finishing first in 2017. He also becomes just the fourth multiple winner of the award, joining Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury and the winner of the last two years, Brodie Grundy. It’s well-deserved – I feel like Taylor really came of age this season.

Here’s the final vote tally:

1. Taylor Adams 44
2. Scott Pendlebury 36
3. Jack Crisp 29
4. Brayden Maynard 25
5. Brodie Grundy 20
6. Darcy Moore 19
7. Josh Daicos 18
8. Jeremy Howe 14
Steele Sidebottom 14
10. John Noble 11
Adam Treloar 11

12. Jordan De Goey 10
13. Jamie Elliott 9
14. Brody Mihocek 8
Isaac Quaynor 8
16. Mason Cox 5
17. Darcy Cameron 2
Levi Greenwood 2
19. Chris Mayne 1
Tom Phillips 1
Rupert Wills 1

Adams was also considered by Nicksters to be the best player of the finals, scoring eight votes – ultimately, the difference between him and runner-up Scott Pendlebury – from two games.

I also want to give a special mention to some of the players who served us well week in, week out, without getting much recognition in the voting threads. Jordan Roughead was a rock for us down back, while Jack Madgen stepped up to have a breakout season, becoming a super-reliable defender. Callum and Tyler Brown unfortunately couldn’t get a vote in the award named after their dad, but both showed encouraging signs. While much-maligned on here, I felt that Josh Thomas was a key component of some of our best wins – not least in the elimination final against West Coast – often quietly getting the job done. And while, unlike those listed above, he actually did get a vote this year – way back in Round 1 – I can’t finish this without mentioning the heart and soul of the team, Chris Mayne. We all notice the flashy match winners and high possession winners, but it’s guys like these that make a champion team – which I hope we will get to be again very soon. Let’s hope next year’s Gavin Brown Medallist has a premiership to go with it.

——————————————

Stay tuned sometime tonight for the official count of that most venerable of Nick’s Bulletin Board institutions, the Gavin Brown Medal – the only fan-voted honour for Collingwood players that I’m aware of and/or can be bothered to acknowledge the existence of – now in its fifteenth year!

Here’s the list of Dane Swan and other past winners:

2006: Dane Swan
2007: Tarkyn Lockyer
2008: Dane Swan
2009: Dane Swan
2010: Dane Swan
2011: Dane Swan
2012: Dayne Beams
2013: Dane Swan
2014: Scott Pendlebury
2015: Scott Pendlebury
2016: Scott Pendlebury
2017: Taylor Adams
2018: Brodie Grundy
2019: Brodie Grundy

Will Grundy defy the h8rs by notching his third straight win? Will Pendlebury do it again for old times’ sake? Will the future captain (sorry P4S, that’s Adams, not Langdon) back up his Copeland triumph with an even higher honour? Will Jack Magden outpoll Jack Madgen? Will I fall asleep early tonight and incur the wrath of the Nick’s faithful? All this and more will be revealed.

I’m thinking we may have missed Howe and Steele in the finals.

Things really tightening up at the halfway mark! Grundy, Moore and Adams are closing in on Pendles, and Maynard and Sidebottom are both well and truly in the hunt too.

^Shouldn't that be 5,4,2.5,2.5,1? Or 5,4,2,2,1? The value of votes can't go up because two people tie.

Oh, not sure! This is the way I’ve always done it, at any rate. It doesn’t make any less sense to me than giving them each the lesser vote, but I can see the rationale for halves (I guess my reasoning is that if two players finish on top at the end of the count, they’ll both come first, not 1.5th or equal 2nd!) Happy to take feedback and adjust the count if others agree though.

I don't much care - it's just the principle. In theory, if eg 5 people all happened to get the same number of votes in a round, they'd take 25 votes from a game for which 5 votes should be awarded, that's all.
