A very valid point Tannin Smile

^^^ I don't think anyone really believes that 17 Republicans will vote to convict (although it would, of course, be beyond hilarious if they did). It's the potential political consequence of Republicans being compelled to take a position that makes this interesting.

Who needs congress?

Joe will just sign EOs. He's up to, what, 60 EOs.

And he's employed a Press Sec who can't explain anything.

New POTUS, sign EO's like IOU's for the first few weeks, capitaslise on the warm fuzzies of the voters before the inevitable fatigue of not being able to get anything done because of Congress.

Every POTUS since whenever.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/09/trump-impeachment-senate-vote-trial

The Senate voted that the trial is constitutional. 6 Republicans sided with the Democrats on that question. Next comes the interesting part. As I have previously said, it's one thing to say that he shouldn't be convicted because "we lack jurisdiction" - it's another thing altogether to say that he shouldn't be convicted because what he did wasn't actually treasonous. Interesting times. The substantive trial - and the coverage of Republican voting on it - could do considerable and lasting damage to the Republican Party amongst the ranks of those they need to woo to get back into power.

And here's an opinion poll (Gallup) that suggests that Republican approval is slipping, even amongst Republicans: https://news.gallup.com/poll/329561/gop-image-slides-giving-democrats-strong-advantage.aspx

It may be just temporary, of course - but that's the real issue about the present trial - can the Republicans survive this without imploding politically?

The parties were neck and neck on favourability before the election but the Democrats were apparently 11% ahead by the start of February 2021.

I always expect more guns to be at American riots, given how much I hear about their gun culture. Didn't see one person in that mob with a gun.

Most of them were more interested in waving flags and taking selfies. As far as riots go it was very underwhelming.

^ No doubt Stui is proffering his opinion based on his extensive first-hand experience of riots and insurrections.

I expect that I've been at just as many riots and insurrections as you, Stui.

Oh, and one more mass killing incident (Mr Gargasoulas in Bourke St).

Correct. Only seven deaths. What a poor effort.
