Have to say, this certainly shows that Herritier is pointing out a real issue here, not imagined at all. Some on here have seriously questioned the guys mental state, or monetary motivations, as if it's his issue, not ours. (or Collingwoods)

I really do hope Leon gets more than a token phone call from the club, especially when you take into account how esteemed he is/was by the fans, both as a person and as such a great player for us.

I really wonder that people (because it’s not only you) can read this article and respond with a comment like this

I don’t see any evidence that Collingwood is “probably better” than any other AFL club and struggle to understand what makes you think that is the case

Any workplace that doesn't address and correct issues like these in the 21st century is a failure at leadership and culture, which usually starts at the top

Every Pies fan should be embarrassed by this, not saying “yeah but whattabout...”

I just re-watched the 2010 Grand Finals today... and yes, Leon was quiet, but his goal put us back into the game, so I would hope it was for gameplan reasons to take him out, and not something else.

Whatever the reason, it still breaks my heart Leon didn’t get to be a part of the win and be the first aboriginal Collingwood player (I think) to lift the premiership cup. It’s a testament to his character and willpower that he was still at the club after what he endured with the racism.

Kennett 'racism' pile-on misses the point on AFL crowd control

So that's one. Note the difference in the approach by the media.

Eddie was constantly in front of cameras and microphones, morning radio, TV, footy talk shows, etc, etc. As Collingwood president and a massive media presence, he had a massive target on his back and a legion of envious cretins just waiting to sink the boots in.

So, let's be fair, why not list all the racist things he said? Other than that dubious 'King Kong' joke, I'll think you'll be surprised at how little there is to condemn him with.

You can't see any evidence that Collingwood is 'probably worse' either, yet many seem keen to embrace that characterisation, as if it's somehow demonstrates superior moral fibre to do so.

Regardless of whether it's true or not.

We know that racism exists across the league (and within Collingwood), odds are that a well resourced club with a higher level of public scrutiny than most will be less likely to transgress. Out of self-preservation if nothing else.

"I can guarantee you if the AFL was extensively audited, it would reveal even worse findings than the Collingwood Football Club,”
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-racism-review-would-have-findings-even-worse-than-collingwood-lumumba-20210203-p56z6w.html

Is Lumumba engaged in 'whataboutism'?

He believes there are worse offenders in the league, which is more evidence than you can provide to say that Collingwood is 'the worst'.

As for your point about 'any workplace that doesn't address these issues...', I'm lost at what point you're trying to make here, who commissioned the report? Which AFL 'workplace' is taking positive action to address racism?

Which are not?

At the moment, every club that hasn't had a warts and all review of the issue is worse than Collingwood.

Every. Single. One.

^ ^ ^

I would think StKildas recent apology to Robbie Muir would qualify as a club who badly missed the mark in identifying and understanding racism.

I have no doubt some clubs have been able to manage racism ( or the lack of it ) better than others. We haven’t handled it well but there is certainly nothing to suggest we were the “ only “ club to get it wrong either.

I don't need to provide any evidence that Collingwood is 'the worst' because I never said that. You on the other hand said they're probably better than every other club, and are now engaged in pretzel logic trying to justify it

What I said is that what went on at Collingwood with regards to Leon was an embarrassment. I honestly don't care about ranking other clubs in comparison to try to minimise that, which is what "whattaboutism" is

Really? I thought my statement was pretty clear: Lack of leadership and good culture at the club, most likely stemming from the top down, led to this behaviour not being stamped out years ago. That means the president and other senior people who should have acted decisively years ago. We're not talking about the 1970s here

I loved Leon but his grand final performances were shocking, that's why he was dropped and why Goldsack was brought in.

Always loved Leon and was shocked when he left the club after that great year. Was it something to do with Bucks and was he part of the racism that Leon felt? I would hate to think that Bucks was like that...
But Leon left for some reason. missing out on the Grand Finals could have been the reason he didnt feel the love.
A sad read. Feeling more sympathetic about this having read his story.

Clearly Lamumba was right, despite all the naysayers. Good to see Leon speaking out, as difficult as it would be. Let's hope momentum for change keeps building.

People often seem to forget, but he was named in the 2011 grand final side and acquitted himself pretty well in what turned out to be his last game for the club – 20 touches from the backline and 11 tackles (his equal-highest ever in a match, and the second-most on the ground that day behind James Kelly). Just a pity he wasn’t able to become a premiership player that day for real.

No Leon left because the club demanded he take a pay cut. Leon is on record saying it had nothing to do with Bucks. Considering how he he was treated earlier in his career, and how the club didn’t really deal with it, it contributed to Leon leaving on bad terms. A few players were demanding more than they were worth (premiership heroes after all) and Leon got squeezed out.

Under-rated player. Way better than Eddie Betts I reckon. People forget how good Leon was and his failure in the big games tarnishes peoples memory of his brilliance with the ball.
