Post subject: The Curse of the Pratt Cup | |
|
How fitting that Collingwood is playing for the Pratt Cup this week. Hard to believe it's been nine years.
It was in 2009 that the CFC board announced they had agreed to Carlton's request to beatify Australia's greatest corporate criminal, Richard Pratt, with a perpetual trophy named in his honour. Not surprisingly, the CFC membership howled it's disapproval.
Caught out in a moment of hubris, Eddie McGuire quickly called a press conference to announce the succession plan - forever tainting it with the stain of the Pratt Cup.
Football is a religion and religion is about folklore and superstition. I made the claim at the time that the succession plan was cursed. I was right.
A flag in 2010 and GF appearance in 2011 was enough to convince Buckley he should probably put things off for a year or two. Would this have lifted the curse? We'll never know. McGuire was adamant and no longer the pragmatist he once was. It would go ahead as planned.
Last night the pundits on the TV said Buckley was the "unluckiest coach in the history of the game" due to the injuries he has dealt with over the journey.
Unlucky or cursed? We will never know until we refuse to play for that stupid cup ever again.
Starting this Friday. Dump the Cup. Lift the curse. Save Buckley.

It was reported in the news at the time of the change over. Nobody paid much attention, but Buckley made sure he got it on the record. Ask him about it next time you see him at a VFL game or something like that. _________________ Join the KOA at www.facebook.com/groups/knightsofabbotsford |

1970's description of the late Richard Pratt is disgraceful.
The mods should not have allowed it. |

Still do.
Pratt Cup is for Prostate Cancer when Carlton are the home team
Peter Mc is for the Cancer Hospital when Collingwood is the home team
Both are worthy causes to play for.
The Pratt Cup complainants sound a wee bit bit like the surname might suggest. A bit churlish some might say.
Yes he was a crook (How carlton like) but paid his penalty - the harshest at the time and his reputation has been suitably & irreparably tarnished.
It's heatening to see that an employer looked after injured employees Baz.

I agree. He has a daughter and a son in law on the board at Collingwood. Also, calling him a crook is a gross misunderstanding of the circumstances he was fined for price fixing. His competitor, Amcor did a deal with the government to avoid prosecution. The board at Amcor were just as guilty as Pratt because they were in on the price fixing. Pratt wasn't convicted of any crime. Companies are fined every day of the week for breaching the ACCC rules and no one bats an eyelid, but Pratt copped it because of his high profile. |

Oh come on. His rort stole from every man, women and child in Australia for years. Amcor did too and were just as guilty. Pratt didn't get convicted because he died before trial. Pratt was an absolute scumbag who swanned around as the great philanthropist, but it easy to be charitable with stolen money. May God spit on his grave. |

How is a 15-yr-old able to get beer, Baz? Are there different alcohol rules for the Pratts? |
