This is madness...

Quote:
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are among 12 clubs who have agreed to join a new European Super League (ESL).

In a seismic move for European football, the Premier League clubs will join AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.

The ESL said the founding clubs had agreed to establish a "new midweek competition" with teams continuing to "compete in their respective national leagues".

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Uefa and the Premier League condemned the move to launch a European Super League when news of it broke on Sunday.

World governing body Fifa has previously said it would not recognise such a competition and any players involved in it could be denied the chance to play at a World Cup.

Uefa, Europe's governing body, reiterated this warning on Sunday when it said players involved would be banned from all other competitions at domestic, European or world level and could be prevented from representing their national teams.

After the Super League was announced, Fifa expressed its "disapproval" of the proposed competition and called on "all parties involved in heated discussions to engage in calm, constructive and balanced dialogue for the good of the game".

In a statement, the ESL said: "Going forward, the founding clubs look forward to holding discussions with Uefa and Fifa to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new league and for football as a whole."

I’m still speechless hours after the announcement.

The ripple effect this will have on the domestic league and cup competitions and on UEFA cannot be understated.

Just shaking my head that we’ve signed up to this. The emotional investment for the rest of the season and beyond will diminish if this goes ahead.

This might be the day when football is officially dead.

I hope it happens. The greed of these big clubs is astounding and they are predatory . How many English players will be kicked out. Hardly any. Good, they can play for one cup a year and poach each others players until the yanks and arabs get sick of stumping up the cash and the greedy players realise they have missed out on world cups etc. No International caps. Live with your money and enjoy it when teams get relocated to Qatar, Doha and other places where there flamboyant lifestyle will be banned and the trophy wife pisses off back to the Riviera with kids and a 100 million dollar divorce settlement.

It won;t affect the other leagues. Some players who are really reserves players at these clubs may decide it is better to go to another club and stay in their own country and play firsts . Clubs will now have a chance to win something. If Celtic and Rangers joined this the other clubs may have a chance to win something.

The lower income people won;t bother to pay big money to watch it and instead go and follow a local team.

In Thailand every where I go I see the Thais with football shirts but they are prominently Manu, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. Do you think these people who live 5 people in one room flat with cold water are going to suddenly find the money to watch on pay tv,

It is not the end of football. I hope the league goes ahead and they go broke and the game goes back to what it was meant to be, And private ownership is critically panned and clubs go back to being member based. We have had 2 privately owned footy club in Australia in the AFL Beisbane Bears and Sydney Swans, Both owners turned out to be crooks. They were both gifted by the AFL and in reality they should have folded.

Bring it on because I won.t pay a baht to watch it.

Now that the UK have left the EU, the government just need to re introduce the two foreign player rule to all UK clubs to really stuff that up for the six UK teams.

Big moves overnight. Chelsea is out. Several other clubs are also reportedly out and the ESL appears to have collapsed. The Guardian has a fast-moving live blog, here: https://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2021/apr/20/european-super-league-backlash-builds-against-breakaway-plan-live

Fantastic to see this whole thing collapse on itself.

It was nothing more than an elaborate scheme cooked up by the American-owned English clubs plus the debt ridden clubs in Italy and Spain.

May as well have called the competition the "JP Morgan Cup" Laughing

Latest news on the Super League.

Quote:
European Super League: Uefa and Fifa rules banning breakaway league unlawful, says court

Banning clubs from joining a European Super League was unlawful and Uefa and Fifa are "abusing a dominant position", the European Court of Justice has ruled.

It had been claimed by the ESL and its backers, A22, that Uefa and Fifa were breaking competition law by threatening to sanction clubs and players who joined the breakaway league.

A ruling on Thursday from Europe's highest court found against the governing bodies.

However the court stated: "That does not mean that a competition such as the Super League project must necessarily be approved".

An initial report released last December by the ECJ said the rules of football's European and world governing bodies were "compatible with EU competition law".

However, the verdict will be seen as a blow to the authority of Uefa and Fifa and how they govern the game.

Further developments.

64 teams and 3 divisions is the new proposal.

Quote:
The European Super League's backer, A22 Sports, set out its updated proposals for a Champions League replacement on Thursday after a European court found that UEFA's rules restricting the creation of new competitions were "unlawful."

A22 Sports chief executive Bernd Reichart outlined plans for a three-league, 64-club men's competition and a two-league, 32-club women's competition. It would replace the UEFA Champions League and Women's Champions League.

Thus far, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Barcelona president Joan Laporta have made statements publicly supporting the A22 plans, while the players' union, FIFPRO, as well as UEFA, FIFA and the European Club Association (ECA) have positioned themselves once again against a new Europe-wide club competition.

The Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and Ligue 1 as well as clubs such as Manchester United and Bayern Munich reiterated they would also not support a Super League.
