Life after Eddie: The battle for the Collingwood presidency

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/life-after-eddie-the-battle-for-the-collingwood-presidency-20210318-p57bsv.html

"The McGuire camp believes Murphy, one candidate for the presidency and favoured by the rank and file at Collingwood, turned against the long-time president along with fellow director and former player Paul Licuria. There were some harsh conversational recriminations over the summer even after McGuire had announced he would depart at the end of 2021 as the ramifications of the not-yet-released Do Better report simmered.
...

Tellingly, there is also a push for constitutional change at board level to introduce term limits for directors – something suggested in the 2017 review but never implemented.

... it has professionally engaged the executive search firm InterSearch Australia to find his board replacement. Some high-profile candidates such as John Brumby, Sally Capp, John Wylie, Jeff Browne and Craig Kelly have ruled themselves out at least in the short term. So Holgate and InterSearch partner Peter Waite, who also led the recruitment of CEO Mark Anderson, continue to sift through a long list of aspirants.
...

McGuire has told friends he had been trying for some years to find a successor without result. Whether he planned to play a role in choosing his replacement during 2021, which had been forecast as his final season, remains unclear but ultimately he left the club abruptly and without a succession plan."

Term limits are long overdue.

It's time the club starting growing up and introduced them as soon as possible.

Jeff Browne is younger brother of former Collingwood and Fitzroy player Murray Browne who played approx 50 games for the Pies in the 80's. Murray was also president of Collingwood past players association so the family connection to the Pies is very strong.

Limits are fine for board members, not the President though. If we get someone good enough, they should be able to be Pres as long as they have the support of the members.

Artificially losing someone brilliant because they've hit an arbitrary limit is self-defeating.

Although anyone not on the current board should be the starting point, I'd trust Eddie's love for the Pies to help him pick the best person for the gig over some recruitment agency. There are key things this club requires that soulless corporate head hunters are unlikely to take into account.

Does it really matter? We should have poached Jeff Kennett from Hawthorn to fix the mess our club has become.

Kennet? That's the one thing that would make me dump the club for good, the man is a clown.

The ideal shelf life of a President is 6-10 years, with a maximum of 12 years. Changing the leader after a period of time allows for renewal and fresh ideas rather than letting it get stale.

No serious or healthy organisation (sporting or non-sporting) has one person running the show for 20+ years.
