Post subject: WHAT exactly did WE get out of the Treloar deal ?? | |
|
Yes, i know it was all bout salary cap issues, -funny how bloody Cats can keep all their stars yet still recruit Cameron an Higgins tho ??- and the fact that we thought Adam might miss his family up in Qld, and that would affect his footy. I know that, but what exactly did we get for him off the Doggies ? and, more importantly, why the hell are we paying $330 000 bucks a yr, towards his Contract at the dogs ?? how on earth was that agree on ?? and what do we get out of all his clustercluck of a trade??
Im rapt we have recruited kids, not re cycled players, but this Treloar deal leaves a very nasty taste in ones mouth, im puzzled we ever went along with this dodgy deal, especially as he really wanted to stay a Magpie ?? _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

We gave the Dogs Treloar and picks 26, 33 and 42.
We received pick 14 and a future second rounder.
And of course, we keep paying.
In effect, we swapped 4 players for 2. |

I dunno, maybe we thought Treloar will become another Tom Boyd.
We didn't want to have him on mental health leave and the Dogs are happy to accept the risk to win a flag.

We traded a reluctant Treloar because our terribly clever administration put Treloar on a backended contract. This meant a loyal Treloar played for less than he was entitled to for several years on the promise that he would receive the rest of his entitlements later in his contract. When "later" arrived we couldn't fit his payments in our salary cap. Of course we are paying a lot of Treloar's salary at the Doggies. We actually owe it to him.
The decision to trade Treloar had nothing to do with his partner and child going to Queensland and even less to do with his failures in disposal of the ball. We traded him because incompetent Collingwood administrators f**ked up his contract. _________________ Born and raised in Black and White |

Yep and points wise, receiving the Dogs #14 cancels out our gift of 26, 32 and 42 back to them.
We basically traded Treloar for a future second rounder and even that looks like blowing out to the very high 30s the way the Dogs are going.
I remember it well. It was actually after trade deadline but they allowed a buffer for paperwork confirmation. I was close to sick in the guts.
And then I realised it was either that or get caught for salary cap breaches in 2021. |

Not getting salary cap sanctions and potentially not being able to recruit Nick Daicos due to likely penalty imposed? _________________ "Hey Ma get off the dang roof!" |

Emmm I think if we're thinking long term and take the failed 2018 yr out of it, all round it put us back about 2-3 years.. _________________ All Aboard!! Choo Choo!!! |

What exactly did Collingwood get out of trading Treloar you ask PNC?
Conflict, ridicule, instability, a lack of run and pace, disrespect, reputation damage, and disbelief; Apart from that it was a winning move. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

What I would like to hear is what people think we should have done instead last year, given the position we were in and the lack of a time machine?
Serious question. We all know it was a shit sandwich - who should we have traded that would have allowed us to keep Treloar and stay under the cap? _________________ https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/sav-sinks-the-dockers/ |

Maybe there is not much different we could have done but did we have to:
1. Send Ned Guy to do some ridiculous interview where he basically lied
2. Keep having Eddie defend what happened
3. Have Buckley make barely any reference to it apart from some insinuation of him not being a team player or there being more to it
Any danger we could have told the truth about the reasons? Or is it better we lie or don't say much and just have the media continue talking crap and supporters going on about it for the whole year?
Guess they decided this is better than the truth..... |

That was the deal... Dogs gave us their pick 14 but needed the equivalent points back so they could still cover Ugle-Hagan
But you're right: effectively we got a future (late) 2nd rounder in exchange for Treloar, So, 2/10ths of FA
Given the timing of the deal (technically after the end of the trade period), we may have been lucky to get that. And still made a mess of it by not formally agreeing on how much of his salary we would pay
(The Age reported <$1m as the final agreement in Dec BTW) _________________ https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/sav-sinks-the-dockers/ |

That’s a fair question
Treloar was the victim of a scenario of giving up money early on the promise of it coming back later
The club needed to clear around (if rumours are right) $1.5/$1.8m in cap space for 2021/22
Stephenson was a no brainer based purely on his behavioural issues and thus saving around $500k
Sidey was offered up to crows and hawks but we couldn’t get a deal done on his current salary of around $700k a year for 2 years
We managed to offload Phillips to the hawks and his salary of over $600k
We tried to move Cox on as well after he triggered a pay rise and extension reportedly around $500k
Of the rest of highly paid players in Grundy Pendles Adams Moore JDG Treloar
& Sidey
So what could we do then ?
Well without offloading a big name player in big bucks it would of had to been a few players (2 possibly 3) on mid range deals like Howe Crisp Maynard Elliott Roughead Mayne Greenwood or foregoing signing JDG or Moore and losing 1 other player from the above list
I don’t think moving Treloar was the club first option or preferred option but the other pieces players like Sidey and Cox we couldn’t send elsewhere
Lose 1 player or lose perhaps 3 players to find the cap relief we needed
This all could have been avoided if we had not backended the Treloar deal so heavily and not overpaid a ruckman for 7 years
I know some will say Grundy is the best ruckman but paying that sort of money you need that player to be a match winner each and every week and Grundy isn’t that. Ruckman don’t impact games like they used too. Other clubs have shown you don’t need a noted ruckman to be successful if you have other players who can win the opposition ball like what happens to us
Hopefully Wright will be able to sort the mess out quickly |

The issue was signing Grundy $7m for 7 years.
We were lured into it and took the bait.
Signing Beams was also a mistake (we are still paying for him in 2021 and 2022 also) |
