Post subject: The Backward Right Are Dragging You DownReply with quote

The list of Glib fails is by now a mile long, as is the list of backward weirdos and religious crazies associated with them. Have they got anything important and consequential right in 20 years? Have they built a better future for you and your children?

Nope. You're being taken for a ride by clueless, air-headed big mouths, and they're making a laughing stock of you as they set you and your children up for a very grim future indeed as the world passes you by. It happens. Whole nations and entire swathes of people can be misled given a few wrong turns, led by some very deceitful and dangerous bad eggs with destructive ideas.

The same people who have got everything wrong for 20 years are still talking the same backward nonsense, allowing shrieking idiots on shock radio, unemployable nutters and bitter retirees on Facebook to distract you while they burn the place to the ground. The mismanagement and irresponsibility over such a long period of time, mostly in power but also when in opposition, is unprecedented.

20 years of non-stop fails and the pissing of Australia's natural bounty down the drain have created a backward, sclerotic economy led by a backward, sclerotic mindset.

To cover up their two decades of failure, now the Glibs want to distract you with constant stress, fear and economic cost through conflict with China. They're in way over their heads and way past their capabilities without proper planning, coordinated regional support or internal competency.

You can keep listening the the very same people who have got every single major issue wrong for 20 years and sleepwalk into decline and disaster, or you can start asking serious questions and take responsibility for serious policy and planning. Doing the hard stuff won't win any Facebook likes, but there are no more handouts from the universe coming Australia's way.

The wealth-, job- and future-wrecking highlights of 20 years of backward ugliness are something to behold:

  • Enthusiastically led two lost wars, human catastrophes, and financial black holes in Afghanistan and Iraq

  • Enthusiastically led climate denial and anti-science propaganda, elevating the work of cranks and loons, miseducating the nation and damaging its international standing

  • Enthusiastically denied global warming even as they did nothing to step in and deal with wildfire risk and poor forestry management practices

  • Enthusiastically damaged green energy and undermined green tech development, destroying future jobs and a key area of national economic development

  • Created severely limiting mining industry dependency, including a reliance on short-term mining jobs to prop up employment numbers to hide their incompetency

  • Refused to develop other parts of the economy and create new job and career opportunities by scuppering a mining windfall tax that could have funded other areas

  • Indirectly helped fund terrorist groups and authoritarians across the world who live off grubby fossil fuel revenues by turning Australia into the international centre of climate science denial and fossil fuels propaganda, extending the life of an anti-competitive, war-funding, democracy-interfering, development-stultifying global menace of an industry

  • Mocked the tech industry as a latte-sipping cafe fad and refused to support tech entrepreneurship — a 'fad' that now dominates ever major financial index globally

  • Not only mocked scientists but hopelessly underfunded science and technology, the two key areas driving the contemporary economy, appointing dim fruit loops like Sophie Mirabella to positions like Minister for Science and Technology

  • Failed to develop existing Australian strengths into new industries, such developing AgTech, green tech, location/tracking/logistics tech, etc.

  • Supported destructive nutter Abbott, the handmaiden of the mining industry, in the running of his puerile culture war even as the economy and regional relationships were declining

  • Gave full-throated, fawning support to two horror show extremist US Republican administrations in Bush/Cheney and Trump, which both made a complete mess of both that country and everything they touched around the world

  • Ruined Australia's international reputation and middle-power influence by associating the nation with an endless stream of bigoted, self-entitled, anti-Enlightenment ideas and controversies peddled by cranks and extremists, and by engaging in reckless, big-mouthed, Trump-like social media outbursts

  • Wrecked the most important industry and job-creating infrastructure of the 21st-century, the NBN

  • Built a corrupt minister-lobbyist-advisor revolving door with the mining industry so that it gets what it wants every single election at the expense of the rest of the economy

  • Supported mental case Trump and his chaos, becoming his collateral damage in a ridiculous lose-lose trade war

  • Supported mental case Trump and his undermining of domestic and international organisations, wrecking international coordination on the pandemic

  • Clapped on species decline and environmental degradation that will never be reversed now, an international disgrace for a wealthy country

  • Reacted cluelessly with a policy-less, unplanned and lurching response towards China, offsiding key regional allies in the process with no game plan or goal in sight

  • Run single news-cycle policy by shock jock and Facebook outrage, with zero serious plans, nurtured and developed over time, anywhere to be seen for the economy and regional relations

  • Are led by retail shoe store manager and global embarrassment Captain Hillsong, who is clearly miles out of his league experientially and intellectually for the most important role in the country

  • Have so little perspective, and are controlled by so many aggressive weirdo sub-groups, that a cringeworthy, world-clueless Neanderthal like Dutton is frighteningly Minister for Defence

  • Have isolated Australia in Asia by making it the flaky, unreliable weirdo of the region in the eyes of major serious regional partners like Japan, South Korea, India and Indonesia, even as the Glibs start conflict with China without consultation

Do the people who have done that to you, and have got every major issue wrong for 20 years, and are chronically lazy and backward, really deserve such undying love and devotion? You wouldn't employ them to run a corner shop, let alone a nation, and you certainly wouldn't be taking advice from them.

You've been sold a lie by snakes in the garden dressed up as church goers. Sadly, they have conned you with smooth words into eating the apple, undermining your lives, livelihoods and security, even as they pocket their rewards. "By their fruits ye shall know them," indeed.

Is it possible you overestimate the identification that voters feel for these parties? My understanding is that the low regard in which politicians are held is actually pretty consistent across the political spectrum, and I suspect many Liberal voters know full well that they’re voting for used-car salesmen and simply don’t care. So while there’ll always be a few partisan diehards who base their identity around being a Liberal voter, there’s no real ScoMo personality cult that I’m aware of. It’s more the case that people have certain things they believe a Liberal government is more likely to provide (say, upper-middle-class tax cuts), and certain ideological preoccupations that they feel will be reflected by policy. We can rage all we like about the Iraq War and Manus Island, but neither of those things ever hurt them one bit – at least, not that they can see.

Americans have a much more worshipful and uncritical relationship with their presidents (the ones on their side of the fence, that is), and even a great many Trump supporters were quite pragmatic about their support for him: they could see he was flawed, but recognised him as a tool to get what they wanted (conservative supreme court justices, more restrictions on abortion, low taxes for higher income earners, saving them from the invasion of the foreign hordes, etc.). That kind of transactional relationship is not actually such an insane approach to politics, and maybe those of us on the left and centre-left could even learn something from it, incidentally (we tend to worry far too much about personal virtue; as the old saying goes, the right looks for recruits and the left looks for heretics).

What would help is for those on the right to recognise that the satisfaction of their short-term interests is coming at a greater cost in the long run, through things like rising temperatures, the effects of capitalism’s dysfunctions on society, the risk of catastrophic military conflicts and the economic inefficiency caused by perpetuating vast inequality. But as I said in the Tony Blair thread, that message has to come from the people they trust and who are fighting for their interests if it’s to carry any weight. It’s no use you or I scolding them; that’s just shouting into the void.

^People in cults and narrow cultural enclaves don't listen, so I'm not wasting my time doing that. They double down. Triple down. The history speaks for itself; these folks are defiantly going down making the same errors again and again. There's no intervening in that except through catastrophe (which the rest of us will pay for).

Economics is also taking them out of the equation by turning them into a new underclass (which the rest of us will pay for, again). The only hope here is that a few bright sparks in the next generation will be moved enough by the decline, self-entitlement and irresponsibility, and have enough personal ambition, to grasp the nettle accordingly.

I do agree the political form is neither here nor there, so don't think I care too much about the form — Glibs, GOP, Tories, Corbyn Lexiters, Socialists or Trump. The cult, brand, leader or slogan of the moment are neither here nor there; the psychiatry and limited pool of experiences, ideas and knowledge, and lack of world curiosity, reinforced by the like-minded in talk and ritual, are the prison walls.

Don't think that entire swathes of people just can't be that wrong or misled. History is full of backward cults trapped in destructive ideas that somehow scaled to take out whole segments of society, generations and even nations.

Just make sure you don't get trapped in the new underclass yourself; it's not your lot in life to suffer for other people's limitations.

Yep, you find far more fanaticism from greenies and a very strange, unexplainable group of Dan worshippers.

Most on the right just like the way things are going and happy with it without this fanatical football like following that lefties have for politics.

America, well that's a whole different beast altogether.

^No problem there on the more fanatical Greens and far leftists groups you don't like. I don't follow Aussie state politics, so I can't comment on Dan Andrews, but I do know you despise him.

Do you support the people responsible for the policy failures I listed in the original post?

So as always it’s all about you😠 No surprises there. The “I’m alright, bugger the rest of you” attitude prevalent among many right wingers I know🙄

Yeah cos so many people vote at elections for the party that will screw them the most...🙄

So you’d go to an election and think, oh if Dan gets in I’ll lose my job but he’ll remove a level crossing somewhere which is nowhere near me but that’s for the greater good, so I’ll vote 1 Dan...🙄🙄

Nah it’s about being really honest about a party’s policies. Every party has policies that you either agree or disagree with, that’s a given. It’s about discerning the policies that I think best represent and reflect my left of centre political thinking. A vast majority of the time the ALP or the Greens appeal to me, being broad churches. However at present I’m not a fan of the Green’s leader. So that leaves the ALP as my choice, at least for the moment.

Is that the only one you took issue with?

"Not overruling" is Eddie-speak for "being begged for help by fire experts and fire services all over the country and flatly refusing to do anything at all".

This is why the recent fires were so very, very bad: everybody knew that a firestorm was on the cards but Morrison refused to listen. Only AFTER the national disaster did he agree to provide basic services like a national large air tanker system to be shared on an as-needed basis between the regions. And, of course, after bagging the easy photo-opp and making the grandiose announcement, he quietly reallocated the money to other things. As usual. Never in the history of this nation has one man "spent" the same dollar so many times in front of so many cameras.

^So, pretty much the Trump of bushfires. Undermine the research and underfund the protective risk management layers; encourage denialist bravado and spread anti-scientific mindset; surround government with fawning hacks and innumerate halfwits with planning time horizon of two minutes; deny risk and bully agencies to avoid dealing with qualified, forthright scientists; deny problem when it hits to avoid bad news cycles; wheel out states to keep hands clean of mess; react miles after the event with photo ops of Christian concern; live in delusional world afterwards that tens upon tens of billions needed to overcome disaster were evidence of superior performance; brush off utter national and environmental catastrophe as god's will.
