I personally find a society that allows such obscene salaries to some elites compared to the rest of us, a filthy dirty indictment on the human race or perhaps our western system. With poverty and homelessness growing at record levels, there can be no moral justification for paying a sportsperson or celebrity these grotesque amounts. I guess that is the whole way our rotten system now works. We all live pay to pay whilst footballers, media types, corporates all live like a ruling class. No one is worth what many of these players are being paid for kicking a football. This is what is destroying our game. I loved the days when footballers were just like us. And as for the Captain, surely our team performance this year should dictate change just like the Coach ? |
You make some good points, many top line sports people, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, are on disgusting amounts of money, bloated payments of millions of dollars, especially soccer and Yankee basketball. These people dont live in the real world, unlike the rest of us. Actually AFL players are really lowly paid compared to the obscene amounts soccer players get overseas, UK and Europe etc. As for Pendles, he has been wonderful Captain, but its probablly time he stepped down next season, so he can concentrate on his last two yrs in football, take the weight off him, and let a younger player have it, like Taylor Adams or Moore. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

Pendles is 2 years past his used by date as captain.
Adam's needs to fix his game killing disposal.
We are sadly devoid of good options. _________________ Buon Giorno |

If Pendles is going to give up the captaincy (and my preference would be for him to keep it for the remainder of his playing days), our best alternate, right now, is Crisp. |

Moore can't be captain as he is always injured. Adam's disposal could make captaincy tough for him.
Crisp. Not sure.
May as well make Grundy captain. Rarely injured. Highest paid. Always top 5. May be the new age captain that these young kids respond to...times have changed.
Pendles, I'd be offering 1 year at 350k. _________________ Buon Giorno |

Maynard would be a great choice for a few years.
Tay looks most likely- yet injury and form are concerns. |

Darcy Moore must be announced as Captain immediately. He is a first class player and outstanding human being. His father is exactly the same. Both are highly educated University graduates and natural born leaders. Imagine if the Club had the courage to make Peter Moore Senior Coach? We could expect Premierships in multiples with his brilliance. And importantly, uneducated players would need to step up intellectually or go play for a dumb club like Carlton. _________________ I love this club and I hold anyone in contempt who does not think it is worth fighting for. |

Agree, but JT would let the boys have a smoko midway thru each quarter,
wearing skirts is allowed.
My choice of captain would be Adams
In 5 years time it would be Bianco _________________ Jamie Elliott...you beauty

In 10 seasons Adams has averaged around 16 games per year. May as well have two captains if he gets the job. If he was averaging 18-20 I would say yeah go for it. If he was made captain he would have the lowest games/year average of any Collingwood captain since the mid 1960s
Adams 15.8
Pendles 20.69
Maxwell 18.91
Burnsy 18.86
Bucks 18.67 [before 2005 - 20.25]
Browny 18.14
T Shawry 18.41
Choco 22.5 [as a Collingwood player]
Peter Moore 19.11 [as a Collingwood player]
Ray Shaw 18.25
Len Thompson 19.14 [as a Collingwood player]
Max Richardson 21.1 [as a Collingwood player]
Wayne Richardson 21.31
Terry Waters 16.3
Des Tuddenham 16.9 [as a Collingwood player, not including captaincy in 1976 of 11 games and final season of 2 games]
John Henderson 14.4 Captain for part of 1965 after the captain Gabbo handed it over for being too fat.
Ray Gabelich 14.55
Murray Weideman 16.36 _________________ Get back on top. |

Looking at the 1960s, it is important to note that the season was only 18 games until the end of 1967, then it moved to 20 and was only 22 from 1970. So, in 1966 when we played in the Grand Final, Collingwood played a total of just 20 games, including finals. The maximum possible (barring finals draws and there weren't any, relevantly) was 21 (which we played in 1964).
So, eg, Henderson played, on average, all but 3.5 games per year. Moreover, in the three seasons from 1962 to 1964, he played all but 2 games in each season. By contrast, Adams' average in the modern era is indicative of missing more than 6 games, on average, each season. |

You're assuming the future is the same as the past
Adams may just get a great run without injuries.
I was looking at our cattle in the pen and there is no other name that is young enough that jumps at you.
If we don't have enough confidence, why not appoint two captains as other clubs have done. _________________ Jamie Elliott...you beauty

Maynard would be a beauty.
And I'd like to see De Goey promoted to the leadership group. The added responsibility might be the making of him. |
