Maynard's nearly 25. I don't see any sensible reason to trade him, though. Collingwood pumped games into him early and put up with him leaking goal after goal as he gradually improved. He's about to enter his peak years and he is statistically still improving. And he's 1 of about 5 players in the team who can kick. You actually need to keep some competent players, otherwise you end up like Melbourne on the previous 17 "dive into the draft" rebuilds.

You can probably scratch Crisp (one of my favourites), Elliott (another of my favourites) and Adams from the starting team for the next flag attempt. None of them will be there when we are next competitive. Grundy might be because he's a ruckman, rather than a runner. I'd keep Crisp and Elliott, partly because they are reliable players and partly because they don't likely have much market value. Adams would be a good trade option. He's got many admirable qualities and has actually won a Copeland Trophy (which is something no-one else at the Club has done who isn't Grundy, Pendlebury or Sidebottom), so he could have some consequently inflated market value. His value - as a small, slow-ish mid - is only going to decline from here and he probably won't play much past 29 at senior level. He could suit a team that wanted some midfield depth to launch a premiership assault.

I would still be reluctant to trade away any of our core players simply because we know we will have a new coach, new assistants and possibly a new high performance guru.
A new coach comes with fresh eyes and different ideas and with that comes the growth of some and the decline of others.
We aren’t winning our next flag anytime soon, so I think there’s more to be gained by throwing the magnets around with what we’ve got in the short term rather than trading it away. A couple retirements, a couple fringe trades and a delisting or two would do me until the new coach has at least had a year to work with a young list.

At some point, if you keep treating players as pawns, it further tarnishes our image as a destination club.
Having said that, if Sidey ( or whoever ) came to the club and said I’m open to a change of club, then that’s a different story but until players like him can no longer hold his spot in our best 22, I think they are better served as mentors and leaders to our young group ( particularly with our list profile )

If I was to consider an optional strategy in relation to improving our draft / trading hand at the end of the season, I would put our 2022 first round pick on the table ( subject to AFL rules which I can’t confirm ) We would be expected to be rubbish again in 2022, so the return on that pick would be significant. Much easier to find suitors for a top ten pick than a thirty year old quality player who is well past his best. By 2022, our list will be that young, the club may not feel the need for more youth on the list anyway.
Chopping up our 2022 first rounder would easily wipe any 2021 points deficit away and also either pick up a ready made player OR invest again with another mid range pick in the 2021 draft.
While it smacks of chasing our tail at the draft, I think it’s a more sound option than throwing around senior players names like they’re horse meat.

Fantastic post, P2016. I cannot comment on the details you mention about trading and postioning about picks... I know nothing about this.
But I agree wholeheartedly about how we should reject any notion of treating our players as pawns. We project our image as a proud, destination club if Collingwood premiership legends like Sidey are retained to mentor the youth, rather than used as cheap bargaining chips on a casino table.

My understanding of the rule for trading future 1sts is that you must have used 2 first round picks in the preceding 4 years to be eligible. On that basis, we will have used 5 as follows (regardless of 4 year period; 2017 - 2020 or 2018 - 2021).
- 2021 - 1 x Nick Daicos
- 2020 - 3 x Oliver Henry, Fin Macrae, Reef McInnes
- 2019 - 0
- 2018 - 1 x IQ
- 2017 - 1 x Jaidyn Stephenson

This would allow us to trade our 2022 first rounder.

B K , just thinking this through and I’m still struggling to get a definitive outcome on the eligibility of trading futures.

The only possible hurdle I can see for your summary is that in the case of I Q and Daicos ( albeit that hasn’t played out yet ) we won’t have taken a first round selection to those two drafts. We would have picked up I Q and Daicos with an accumulation of late picks which is different to taking a first rounder with you on draft night.
Technically, as per the above, that still leaves 2 first round picks from the last four rolling years but this area of rules and conditions still seems a bit murky.

I will be more satisfied on this anomoly once I see it in writing that we can or can’t trade our future first rounder at the this upcoming trade period.
It would be nice if they just left the trade / draft / father son / N G A rules alone for five minutes.

^^^ Like the rules around FA compensation picks, I think there's a bit of secret saucing here... although the rules are published, I think there's some AFL interpretation of ambiguity at play.

I recall reading somewhere (but am unable to find again) something about bid matched FS or NGA players selected in the 1st round, being considered to be 1st round selections for the matching club for the purposes of future 1st trading.

I'm reasonably confident our 2022 first is able to be traded, but there is a small window of uncertainty.
