At what point does a club appease a player who wants to go home 3 weeks early vs enforces standards to which ALL players should abide by. Was it health related? No. Big family issue? No. COVID-19 related? No. The reason? His girlfriend is there. Wonder if he didn't have the safety of a 2022 contract would he have asked.

Thoughts?

Don’t see it as an issue because the VFL aren’t getting games in and he can’t break into the senior side. As long as he turns up day 1 for pre-season training.

I would have cut ties anyway, and paid out his 2022 contract.

Hasn't done anything to justify keeping him anyway.

With overseas travel as it is and needing to stay away for 3 months before you return due to new restrictions I don't see a problem. He's not driving to Portland.

it seems a fairly sensible decision to me. He is not going to play another senior game this year and there is only an outside chance that the VFL team will play again.
He'll have to do 2 weeks in hotel quarantine when he returns, so let him start his annual break 2 weeks early.

Unlike some here, I think he has shown something and is possibly Roughead's replacement when Roughie retires in a year or two. He is still young and learning the game. I think he has plenty of upside.

Are all our players vaccinated?
I just checked the Irish covid cases. They are averaging about 1500 a day, which, given Ireland's population, is quite high.

I for one am happy to see the club taking an interest in players’ welfare and making accommodations where possible, as opposed to adopting some moronic tough-guy "well if you leave, don’t even think of coming back" stance. We are losing nothing whatsoever by letting him travel home to see his girlfriend and family for a few weeks.

I very much hope that the people criticising this never have jobs in management.

Famous last words. No need repeating that big men need more time to mature. Give him the one more year to run on his contract and re-assess at the end of 2022, giving us more time to make an informed decision.

Absolutely true.
He is 21 and a big guy.
He has talent.

No VFL, no senior games, no problem with the club's decision (in these COVID times) and has shown enough to earn another year IMO

It’s an employees right to ask and an employers right to answer.
Not that this needs to be about fault or blame but the outcome obtained is all on the club and has nothing to do with the player initiating the conversation.
Sounds like two ( ? ) mature adults having a conversation and reaching an outcome that both parties agreed to.

I hope he returns for the pre-season and doesn't decide to give up his quest to become an AFL player. Despite his lack of success at senior level so far, I reckon he has the makings of a good player.

^ He’s contracted next year, not going to get delisted. And he’s not terrible. He’s 21, 194cm and has played 4 senior games
