Post subject: No love for Magden | |
|
Take all of Collingwood's whipping boys over the last ten years, roll them all together and you get Jack Magden. There have been few if any complimentary remarks about him by Nicksters. When there's talk about who should be delisted, Magden's name is always there. Why?
I'm not suggesting he's a Picken, Rance, or Alir. But he puts in. Yes he produces clangers, but no more than some others. Don't forget, he and Roughead are our only tall backs. Darcy Moore hasn't been there for a long time. I think that Jack deserves some credit and I predict that he'll play more than 100 games for us. |

^ I dont have a problem with him. I think he does his job most weeks and can be very dangerous to the opposition.
I generally stay out of and Magden discussions - ya can change bias _________________ "Even when Im old and gray, I wont be able to play but Ill still love the game"

Well, ideally he's not in our best 22.
When selected, he gives 100%. Can't fault his application.
He is likely to concede at least 2 goals per game, but it could be argued most defenders do that anyway.
Not really strong enough to defeat a KPF, but shouldn't be matched up on them in the first place.
Perhaps the new coaching staff can assist with his decision making, with ball in hand? _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

He does pretty well for what he gets paid. It’s hard to criticise him really whilst Moore, on 4 times his salary sits in the stands. He is a depth back up, and competes ok. |

If a clubs list maxed out at twenty five, I would agree with you …. but it doesn’t. Every week ( injuries aside ) 15 players aren’t up to playing seniors for various reasons.
Funny thing, depth. It’s really overrated, until you need it. |

Someone commented recently that Magden is not played in the role that suits him. He has several assets: he is a good mark, he likes to take the game on with an aggressive mindset, he makes reasonable decisions usually. However, his deficiencies lie in his capabilities as a one on one defender, and that of course is where we always play him. Maybe Bux was actually on to something when he played him on the wing one time. Maybe over the preseason we could train him to play a role like this, where he doesn't need to play one on one defence. He could be very good depth for sure. _________________ Free Julian Assange!!

Precisely. Moore rarely on the park and costs a fortune. This is a bigger issue than reliable depth low cost players. _________________ Buon Giorno |

Yes, remember this is big boys forty now, not Auskick. I respect the guy for playing two sports at the highest level in Aus. But skills and decision making still terrible and not getting better with plenty of games under his belt. _________________ Magpies supporters drink at The Riv |

Improved a lot this year. he might not be good enough to hold down a key position for a premiership aspirant, but that means he still has at least three more years on our list before he'll be forced out.
He will always give you 100% effort. This year, he has been winning more 1 on 1s. he actually has an attacking mindset and his mistakes have become more limited.
I agree that he isn't a star and his awkward gait means that his talent will never be acknowledged by those superficial observers of the game, but of all our problems, Jack Magden getting games - because he is good enough based on our list - is not one of them. _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |
