Root is the only player who can blame the pitch or conditions for his dismissal in the Tassie Test:

Everyone else from both sides... just bad batting.

Root's been named the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year.

Afridi won the Sir Garfield Sobers Tophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year. Babar was named ODI Cricketer of the Year.

cricinfo:

'Root's purple patch started right at the start in Sri Lanka, where made a stunning double-century on a Galle turner, and followed that with prolific returns against India, both home and away. With the ball too, Root chipped in with 14 wickets including a maiden Test five-for against India in Ahmedabad.
...

"The Chennai hundred sticks out, to get it in my hundredth game will live long in may memory," Root said. "Incredibly proud to have received this award. Humbled to be in the same breath as a number of players around the world. It means a huge amount to get this award."'

^ It's certainly a weird way of looking at things, since it mostly measures longevity in the role.

The only thing that really matters about Test captaincy is the result record. Here's the top 25 Test captains ordered on win percentage (Root is last on this list) - Australians bolded:

Player Span Mat Won Lost Tied Draw W/L %W %L

Of course, if anyone wanted to talk about Test average as captain, they'd find that Bradman's average in 24 Tests as captain was 101.51 and Steven Smith's average in 35 Tests as captain is 69.59.

By contrast, Root's career average in Tests is 49.23. His Test average as non-captain is 52.80 but his average as captain is just 46.35. Some players are diminished as batsmen by the role. Root is one of them.

Well, the first reaction of folks to this is usually surprise that G. Smith captained so many Tests!!

Captaining your Test side a lot is an achievement in itself.

Wowee! Root's done it again! Exclamation

Back-to-back Test centuries.

119 not out overnight, 1st innings, 2nd Test.

Batting at number 3 for team needs.

Root ended up with 153. Media report it was his 12th 150+ score in Tests, taking him past Alistair Cook for most 150+ scores for England.

"Not that Root was without a bit of luck, dropped by the keeper when on 34, not long after he appeared to get an edge to a Jason Holder delivery that West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite opted not to review.
...

Root has scored more than 2,000 runs since the start of 2021, nearly double the next best haul, and has made eight centuries, his only relatively lean patch coming in a losing Ashes series in Australia."

[Of course, the best batsman in the world, Kane Williamson, has been mostly missing injured...]

Entertaining discussion between the commentators at St georges this morning. The conclusion is that he struggles to control the short ball on wickets with "a little bounce". The shot he lost his wivcket to was described as a "flat track shot".

Anyway, his 2022 continues to unfold. He has now made 358 runs in 10 completed innings. On the two lifeless wickets in the first two Tests of this series he made 109 and 153 (and also 13 and 9). In his remaining innings, he has made 0, 24, 34 and 11 (against Australia) and 0 and 5 (against the West Indies).

There's discussion, now, about whether his technique is "Test-standard". The answer is "probably not" - on the live series averages, he is presently behind Leach and Mahmood. Given that he contrived to put on 262 runs in two flat wickket innings, it's a concern that he shows less resistance on the wickets with movement than England's 8 and 11.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2022/mar/26/englands-big-reset-is-undermined-by-joe-root-the-third-class-captain

Quote:
After the year England’s Test team have had, nine out of 10 captains would have resigned or been sacked. Joe Root survived, somehow, while several other heads rolled. After impressing Andrew Strauss with his appetite, he was given the chance to rebuild his own broken team. He banished Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson, the only top-class bowlers at his disposal. And in the first two Tests in West Indies, it looked as if it might just be working.

Even a Root-o-sceptic had to admit that there were signs of progress. The fielding was sharper, the team spirit stronger, the batters were shaking off the dismal shackles of the Chris Silverwood era. Dan Lawrence, miscast as he might be at No 4, belted some selfless runs. And although both those Tests were drawn, it was England who were pressing for victory on the fifth day.

But that was on a pair of dead pitches – a double featherbed. In Grenada, on a spicier surface, it’s been glaringly obvious that Root has failed to fix one of his team’s biggest flaws: his own captaincy. On the third morning he ran through his full repertoire of howlers.

When Chris Woakes reverted to his overseas inertia with the new ball, Root kept him on for 50 minutes. When Joshua Da Silva tried a big hit, Root moved his third slip into the leg side to save the single. Despite this, the singles kept coming, nearly all of them on the leg side. For one of them, Da Silva sadistically worked the ball just out of Root’s reach at midwicket, leaving him flat on the floor. His red-ball reset was now accompanied by a red-face emoji.

Can't possibly survive this debacle, you wouldn't think.
