Giving up the captaincy may help Root's batting. Of course he's dominated since 2021 (with the best batsman in the world, Kane Williamson, mostly missing injured). But before that he had some lean years. Mark Nicholas reckoned that was just 'cos of the burden of captaincy.
Boycott reckons he's "better off without the captaincy": "The talent around Root has not been of the same quality. No matter how well he went, he could not bat for the rest of the side.

Heading into a series against NZ next month. With India and SAF also touring the UK over their summer.
94 tests between England & NZ have seen the black caps only win on 8 (4 in NZ & 4 in England) occasions.
The battle for the Astle-Atherton trophy has as much appeal as a kangaroos v wiggles round 21 clash in Tasmania... who wins and really, who cares?
Australia paying $1.83 to win the ashes next year is becoming a bit of a term deposit for me, just adding a few bucks every pay day

Joe Root was favourite with the bookies for Man of the Match pre-Test (NZ v England, 2nd Test, Basin Reserve, Wellington). 
He's lived up to it, reaching 101* just before stumps (2 runs to deep square leg on the final ball)...
But he may have competition from Brook, 184* (169). Brook sounds like a Travis Head type. A thumper. Can he/they do it on bowlers' pitches?
Starting at 3/21, Brook and Root shared an unbroken 294-run partnership. |

Another unbeaten century from Root to start this Ashes series.
As commentators said, he's scored much harder Test centuries than this. How can Oz get him out when the pitches are rigged to be so flat?
Atherton reckons Root's the best English player of spin he's ever seen. |

And on top of starring with the bat, Rooty is becoming very handy with his off-spin. Media say that's why England have gone with Tongue over Moeen in T2.
Stokes:
"What Joe showed last week is that his bowling has sort of been someone who you throw the ball to, or has given himself the ball, to bowl the odd over here and there and maybe try and get a breakthrough.
"But he's gone from strength to strength, and the more responsibility I've tried to give him with the ball I think has brought out another side of Joe.

You'd hope Lyon is "almost twice as potent"! 'Cos Root must be way more than twice as potent with the bat. He's averaged around 70 in the Bazball era. Don't think Lyon is averaging 35 in that time! |

Root is an ordinary bowler - Test average of 45. Mind you, that's higher than his Test batting average against Australia, which is 41.13 (and, of course, in Australia, where the ball occasionally assists a fast bowler, it's a poor 35.6 .
The bowling comparison with Lyon is, of course, spurious. Lyon has 109 Ashes wickets. Root has 20. |
