You would think he would have spoken to the coach and worked out where he was in the pecking order, and worked out, not very high

Sad loss. He would have become a very good player for us if he had stayed with us. I can see it from his point of view. He played one game, usually against the opposition's best forward, then got dropped the next week. Moore went down and then Buckley/Harvey decided to play Madgen in the key defensive post instead of Keane. Players don't travel down from Ireland to play reserves football at Collingwood. In truth Keane was never given a fair go by the club, which continued to play over the hill players like Reid instead of looking towards the future. For some reason the Geelong - Collingwood qualifying game in 2020 was the turning point for Nathan Buckley who then decided to turn to the future. If Keane had been persisted with around 2019/20/21 I doubt he would have got homesick and decided to stay in Ireland. It's a lesson for the Collingwood Football Club which won't be repeated under Graham Wright.

Nah that is an overreaction. He was serviceable at best and he won’t be a devastating loss. However his AFL training will be helpful for him when he returns to his Gaelic football club. Hopefully he will be a star back home.

He probably did that is why they came to a “Mutual agreement” to part ways.

Irishman Mark Keane has walked out on Collingwood, opting to stay in his home country. As a Cat B rookie, he can’t be replaced on the list for 2022.

Given he was in his last year of contract and a Cat B rookie, it possibly wasn't worth his effort financially anyway.

I didn't think he showed enough for us to be concerned.

It's time the club put a cease on the Irish experiment because after 15 years that's all it is. An experiment, a long shot an unlikely return on investment. Let's look at the facts:

* Marty Clarke: outside his first 40 matches it was a fail. Re-recruiting him cost a first round draft pick to GWS and he was a shadow of the original player he initially was.

* Kevin Dyas: no games, numerous hamstring injuries

* Anton Tohill: 4 years for 1 ordinary game then says "you know what, I want to be a doctor". That information may have been handy in 2017.

* Mark Keane: went back early in 2020 and allowed to fuel his love of Gaelic footy. Then asked to go back early this year some 6 weeks before official end of season. It's akin to letting your girlfriend have a yearly "hall pass". Eventually they succumb to the lure of an alternative scenario.

Better to invest in 20-24 year old hungry VFL players where the risk/return is much more palpable.

But 20-24 year old VFL players can’t be Category B rookies. We are already as full of 20-24 year old VFL players as we can possibly be.

Exactly WPW. People seem to obtusely overlook the fact that these Cat B rookie positions are additional spots on the lists. The Irish players like Keane are not taking the place of a local AFL raised kid.
The cat B spots are a free hit for the wealthy clubs like Collingwood who can afford them.

If we keep persisting we'll eventually turn up a Tadhg Kennelly or a Zac Tuohy.

Would we still have passed on Youseph Dib if we'd known this 2 months ago?

Not overly worried about this. We do, however, need to focus on young defenders in upcoming drafts.

No. But there's ppl who had Keane in or close to our best 22.

Was Dib Cat B eligible? I guess as a rookie. But he isnt a like-for-like for Keane. Not that that matters.

If we're only talking about internationals or older players from other codes, I dont have any clue who we could have gone for.

I think Bassirou Faye and Tom Wilson are both Cat B's? Were Cox and Shae Mac? Category B rookie's probably dont have a great success rate.

So we cannot add someone else as a Cat B until next offseason? Maybe we should look at this Alex Carey, formerly from GWS. He's been talked about lately.

In other news the #11 is now available.
