M8, you seem to have both those scenarios arse about and if you're not careful, you'll be in line to captain England!

If your strength is batting, you BAT! If your strength is bowling, you bowl! Although in the second instance, it also depends on the strength of your batting. And I seem to remember the Windies had one or two batsmen ... like Haynes,Greenidge,Richardson,Richards,Lloyd,Logie,Dujon ... need I continue?

Well in Test matches australia bats first when winning toss on most occassions. Thats usually done because bowling and in particular warne is their strength and therefore he gets better pitch conditions when wicket is deteriorating.

Anyway i understand what you are saying but i seriously think that Ponting had no confidence in that bowling line up. Its been stated before that he doesnt have the up most confidence in Watsons ability with the ball.

I think Ponting was just too confident going into the game yesterday and he really made the wrong choice in electing to field first. Did Ponting actually say he has no confidence in Watson? I find it hard to believe that a captain would say that about any of his players. I love Ricky but was very disappointed in his captaincy yesterday. Watson is a young guy and was the best bowler yesterday so I don't understand why people are criticising him!

Lets assume yesterday Watson had a good day bowling.....lol the fact is he went for 72 runs........heaven help us if he has a bad day....lol lol

Just keep reading the Herald Sun as that is where i read most of my cricket related reading from or Sky Sports website or crickinfo website. I try an read both local and overseas articles to get a fairer outlook on the situation.

Is Watson the next Scott Muller ??

Im sure Watson didn't play his best game ever but geez I didn't see anyone else doing any better which is why I am saying leave him alone! As for reading the papers I wouldn't believe anything they say I find it hard to believe that Ponting would make such a comment even if he thought it!

The Don said, in his 'The Art of Cricket', when you win the toss, you bat first 9 times out of 10 and the other time you have a think about it and bat first.

A couple of comments:

As a Test captain, he always had a pretty good batsman at first drop to follow his very good openers but this is usually a good rule of thumb.

The reason Steve Waugh strays from this (at times) is he has the ammo, and an incredible faith in his team to support any decision he makes.

Steven Fleming and Nasser Hussain tried this on the Aussies. Both times in the first Test of a series and both times on a good Gabba wicket on a sunny day. Both times the Aussies plundered.

Fleming's decision could be said to be bravely taking it up to the Aussies (as the Kiwis often do well) but Hussain's was suicidal and really not backed with any strategic sense, not to mention the morale-sapping slap in the face for Trescothick and Vaughn.

Limited overs cricket is a different kettle of fish and other factors are involved but captains still like to bat first unless it's a green wicket. In a day game, it's a bit more likely that a team may wish to chase.

Andy Bichel has been ruled out of the Aussies' VB Series match against Sri Lanka in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Brad Williams and Nathan Bracken have been called into the squad as cover for both Bichel and Glenn McGrath.

McGrath's fitness for Wednesday's match is still to be determined after suffering joint irritation in his lower back.

Bichel suffered an injury during Saturday's match against England in Hobart following a heavy dive in the field.

Jimmy Maher will keep wicket in tomorrow's match against Sri Lanka and will probably open the batting due to the resting of Adam Gilchrist.

Some may wonder why Ryan Campbell won't be doing the job. Normally he would be but as Maher has been pencilled in as reserve 'keeper in the WC squad, he's got the job tomorrow to get some practice.

Glen McGrath may yet play. It depends on a fitness test in the morning.

Australia turned in a good performance in the field after Sri Lanka won the toss and batted.

McGrath and Williams got the Aussies off to a good start and from the 4th. ball of the 6th. over, Watson brilliantly ran out Jayasuriya, by the smallest of margins.

Another piece of slick fielding saw Tillakaratne depart and de Silva went, first ball, to Lee. Atapattu scored 70 and good contributions from Jayawardene (56) and Sangakkara (42 n.o.) had Sri Lanka set for a reasonable total but 2 more run outs and good bowling from McGrath and Williams restricted the scoring to 28 from the last 8 overs.

Williams bowled particularly well and McGrath came through unscathed. They both returned 1/31. Hogg also did the job and took 2/38 from his 10. Australia needs 212 to win.

What a good contest! There have been more thrilling finishes but this one was in the balance till right near the end. Michael Bevan stayed cool, as we've seen so many times, to get Australia over the line.

The Aussies were cruising along at 0/76 and eyeing off a bonus point when Murali came into the attack. 10 overs later the score was 3/98. Sri Lanka had taken 3/22 in that time to be right back in the game. Murali had all three!

Maher(30),Hayden(42) and Martyn (1) were back in the shed as Ponting and Lehmann tried to steady. When Ponting went for 15, the game was at flashpoint with Australia at 4/100.

The vast experience of Lehmann and Bevan came to the fore as they added 72 for the 5th. wicket before Lehmann was run out by a great throw from Arnold.

10 runs later, Murali came back on, after pulling a muscle whilst chasing a ball in the outfield, to bowl from a shortened run-up. Watson (4) went almost immediately.

Hogg (14 n.o.)provided the right support for Bevan(45 n.o.)as they finished it off with 7 balls to spare. Murali took 4/27.

This definately wasn't the most exciting game as was shown by Michael Bevan winning man of the match LoL when he really didn't do anything spectacular but they had to give it to someone! Hopefully the game at the MCG on Tuesday will be better as I plan on attending! However it was a good win for Australia!

Yup a good close win against Australia. However they still have major problems playing Murali as do most teams i guess.

Ricky Ponting played a very disappointing shot and would be rather embarrassed i would say considering he was facing grandpa De Silva. Dunno what Watson was thinking with that shot against Murali in a pressure situation. Is it true the ABC mentioned the word "unintelligent"?

Bevan played a workman like innings to steer his team to victory. Whether he was man of the match is debateable though.

Highlight of the game was the stumping of Maher. That was the best stumping ive ever seen.

I have a question for Donny as he seems to be Lehmanns number 1 fan. So M8 can you please confirm whether that bald fat bloke has made some alleged racist comments after being run out last night ? Great leadership material

No. I know you have a great respect for me, m8, but I don't have access to that info. All I can tell you is he apologised to the Sri Lankan players immediately after the game and regrets saying what he did.

I also would like to clarify, 1. I'm not Dazza's No1 fan and have never said so. I made it clear who my favourite players are, elsewhere in this forum. I'm also not Damien Martyn's or Shane Watson's No1 fan. I have only pointed out to you their abilities and stats, from time to time.

2. I have never said that Lehmann should be captain of either team. I only mentioned his name along with Ponting,Gilly,Warney,Katich and Hayden as possibilities in my 'Who will replace Waugh?' topic. He is a state captain and deserved the mention, if only for that reason. I happen to think he (and Katich and Haydos) has as much chance of being national skipper as Jason Ackermanis has of receiving fan mail from the Collingwood cheer squad.

Its safe to say that Ponting has not fully mastered the art of playing spin bowling judging by his stumping against Grandpa De Silva.

The Watson dismissal was a classic though. Murali was of one step when he bowled the ball yet still bamboozled Watson. That was a classic.

Martyn looked a little suspect as well.

I still think Hayden is the only Australian player fully competent against high quality spin bowling.

The only reason i mentioned your name Donny was that you always write about Lehmann and defend him, so i thought what better opportunity than this to defend him....lol lol

Australia need 215 to win after holding Sri Lanka to 8/214, today at the MCG.

Atapattu (26) and Gunawardene (45) got their team off to a solid start but the Aussies just stuck to the game plan and the Sri Lankans never really got going. Sangakkara (43 from 56) hit two sixes in a good knock but de Silva took 73 balls to score 44.

Hogg turned in another good performance with the ball, his 10 overs yeilded 3/37 and Bichel was tight with 1/33. Watson held two good catches.
